Taking our cues from the colors of fall. 🍂

Warm earth tones, natural textures, and rich finishes come together in this autumn-inspired flat lay curated by our interior design intern, Karen Garcia-Carranza.

Currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in interior design at Purdue University, Karen has a passion for creating spaces that make a difference in how people feel and experience their surroundings.

But for Karen, design goes far beyond choosing colors and finishes:

“I love designing spaces that people might typically dread or feel uncomfortable entering and transforming them into places they genuinely want to be.”

Every space we design starts with a question: Who will it serve? It's a question Sarah Hempstead has carried throughout her career, and one that continues to shape her approach to leadership. This week, IBJ Media named Sarah one of its 2026 CEOs of the Year.

Sarah joined Schmidt Associates in 2001 as a graduate architect. Today, she leads the firm as only the second CEO in our 50-year history. Along the way, she has remained grounded in a simple belief: Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about empowering others with the trust, information and support to find them, while inspiring them to do their best work.

Sarah's leadership reflects the same commitment to people and purpose that guides our work every day. We couldn't be prouder to see her recognized alongside five other outstanding leaders making a difference across Indiana.

Coming to Louisville: the new Hosparus Health Care Center, a 21-bed hospice built around a simple idea; families come first. It’s expected to open in summer 2027.

Hosparus wanted a clear break from the traditional hospital setting, a warm, comforting place that feels like home. Living-room-style suites with room for family to stay overnight, a family kitchen, spaces for children to play, and a meditation room make that real, giving loved ones places to gather, rest, and take a moment for themselves.

The healing garden, designed by Jon Carloftis, was part of Hosparus’ vision from day one. It connects the new center with the Harshaw Family Grief Counseling Center, giving patients, families, and those who are grieving a shared place to walk, sit, and know they are not alone.

We’re proud to serve as architect on this one. Louisville has a real need for this kind of care, and we’re grateful to help Hosparus bring it to the families it will serve. Alongside The Koetter Group, KPFF, BCCLT, Inc., and LD&D.

New turf. New track. A whole new game-day experience. 🏟️

Following a Districtwide Athletic Facility Assessment, Jefferson County Public Schools saw an opportunity: transform Waggener High School into a stadium worthy of its Friday night lights. What followed was a comprehensive renovation built to elevate the experience for athletes, spectators, and the broader community, and position Waggener as a high-performing venue ready for year-round competition.

Upgrades include:
• New home and visitor bleachers
• A redesigned press box
• A centralized support building with restrooms and concessions
• Synthetic turf built for multi-sport use and better drainage, plus new goal posts and a modern scoreboard
• A new running track and upgraded field event areas

The result: a stadium that lives up to Friday night lights, and everything else the community brings to it year-round.

For many Indianapolis residents, Washington Square Mall brings back memories of growing up on the city's east side. But what could the mall mean to future generations?

In the latest episode of "Luminate," host Sarah Hempstead sits down with Michael-Paul Hart Indianapolis City-County Councilor, District 20 and Joseph Jarzen to discuss Hart's path to public service, his approach to community leadership, and his vision for the city's east side, including the potential to reimagine Washington Square Mall.

The conversation looks beyond what Washington Square once was and explores what it could become with a shared vision and community involvement.

Designed for heroes. Built for hope.

For years, the Pediatric NeuroRecovery team worked across four floors. Now, for the first time, care and research are together under one roof. Asked to sum up the change in one word, a therapist said "cohesion."

Here, children and teens with spinal cord injuries work toward greater independence, families have spaces shaped by their own ideas, and care teams keep pushing what's possible.

Our team was honored to transform this 14,000-square-foot floor at Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in partnership with the University of Louisville, Kids Kick Paralysis, and Kosair for Kids.

Big things are ahead for Northeast School Corporation!

Building on priorities identified through a facility assessment with Schmidt Associates, the district is making a meaningful investment in all three of its schools, from new places to learn and compete to behind-the-scenes work that protects its buildings for years to come.

What's ahead:
- A home field the Thunderbirds can be proud of, with synthetic turf, new lighting, scoreboards, and fencing
- A new agriculture building that gives ag students a home of their own, with an indoor classroom, lab, greenhouse, and outdoor learning space
- A renovated culinary classroom
- Targeted roof replacement, intercom, and drainage upgrades at the high school
- Playground equipment, drainage, and fencing improvements at both elementary schools

Auto shows, balloon races, livestock, and visitors from around the world, all in one place.

Modernizing the Kentucky Exposition Center is one of the largest investments in the state's history and one of the defining projects of this decade.

"It's the great-grandfather, the grandfather, the father, and the son all walking the cow across the parking lot together," said Ben Simmons, AIA, LEED AP, Schmidt Associates principal-in-charge.

For Simmons, the project is about more than scale. It's about carrying a Kentucky institution forward for generations to come.

Some stadiums hold more than a game. They hold generations of Friday nights.

Jefferson County Public Schools set out to renew Louisville Male High School’s stadium in a way that honored its athletic legacy while preparing the facility for years of continued use.

The renovation addressed aging infrastructure and drainage concerns, strengthened key stadium elements, and introduced a new synthetic turf field designed for consistent performance throughout the season.

Now, Louisville Male High School’s student-athletes, coaches, families, and fans have a renewed home field worthy of the tradition they bring to it.

Here’s to many more Friday nights under the lights. 🏈

None of us knew where we'd end up, but somewhere between coloring inside the lines and building towers on the living room rug, a path started to take shape.
