🔧 Sometimes the Best Repair Is NOT Replacing Something!

I recently had a client ask me to replace the bathtub drain stopper and trim.

Under normal circumstances, this would be a straightforward project. But this particular bathtub had already been refinished with a new coating, and I was concerned that attempting to remove the old drain could damage that finish.

Instead, I suggested another option.

I carefully sanded the existing drain trim, masked off the surrounding bathtub with painter’s tape, and used a plastic bag to help contain the overspray while applying chrome-colored spray paint.

The goal was to give the drain a refreshed appearance that complemented the existing tub spout and diverter without disturbing the refinished bathtub.

The project turned out great!

One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that a successful home repair isn’t always about installing something new. Sometimes it’s about preserving what’s already there.

This was a cosmetic solution for an otherwise functional drain, and any coating used in this application needs to be suitable for the conditions.

🛁 What would you have done? Replace the drain or restore the existing trim?

🛁 RESTORE IT, DON’T REPLACE IT!

Here’s a bathtub repair that required a little creativity!

My client wanted to replace the drain trim in a bathtub that had previously been refinished. Normally, replacing the drain wouldn’t be a problem, but I didn’t want to risk damaging the tub’s newer coating.

So I came up with another solution!

✅ Sand the existing drain trim.
✅ Carefully protect the tub with painter’s tape.
✅ Use a plastic bag to contain overspray.
✅ Apply chrome-colored spray paint to complement the existing fixtures.
✅ Enjoy the refreshed appearance!

No drain removal. No unnecessary risk to the refinished surface.

Sometimes being a good handyman means finding a creative solution rather than simply replacing parts.

🔧 A Simple PVC Pipe Hack for Storing Reciprocating Saw Blades!

After years of working as a handyman, I’ve learned that keeping your tools organized doesn’t always require expensive storage systems.

One of my favorite inexpensive solutions is a homemade storage tube for my reciprocating saw blades.

Using a piece of 1¼-inch PVC pipe, a permanent end cap, and a removable threaded cap, I created a convenient place to keep my blades together.

I simply cut the pipe a little longer than my longest blade, glue the fittings in place, and let everything cure before putting it to work.

Why do I like this solution?

✔ Keeps all my reciprocating saw blades in one place.
✔ Helps protect the teeth from damage.
✔ Prevents loose blades from scratching other tools.
✔ Makes storing and transporting blades easier.
✔ Costs very little to make!

It’s a simple project that can make a big difference in how you organize your toolbox, garage, or work van.

Have you made any homemade organizers for your tools? I’d love to hear your ideas!

🛠️ A SMART HOME FOR YOUR SAW BLADES!

Here’s one of my favorite inexpensive tool organization tricks!

Instead of letting reciprocating saw blades bounce around loose in my toolbox or work van, I made a protective storage tube using 1¼-inch PVC pipe.

It’s simple:
✅ Cut the PVC longer than your longest blade.
✅ Glue a permanent cap onto one end.
✅ Add a threaded adapter and removable screw cap to the other.
✅ Store your blades safely inside!

This keeps my blades organized, helps protect their cutting teeth, and prevents them from scratching or damaging other tools.

Sometimes the best tool storage solutions aren’t found in the tool aisle. They’re hiding in the plumbing department! 🔧

A Simple Paper Towel Could Help Prevent Expensive Water Damage! 💧

Here’s a little trick I’ve been using for years as a professional handyman.

Whenever I finish working underneath a kitchen or bathroom sink, whether I’m replacing a garbage disposal, installing a new faucet, or clearing a clogged drain, I always thoroughly test the plumbing for leaks.

But before I pack up my tools, I take one additional precaution.

I place a large paper towel underneath the plumbing and ask the homeowner to leave it there for a day or two.

Why?

Because sometimes a very small leak won’t become noticeable until the sink has been used repeatedly.

That paper towel provides a simple visual indicator. If a drip develops, you’ll often notice a water spot before you would otherwise discover the problem.

After 24–48 hours of normal use with no signs of moisture, the homeowner can put their cleaning supplies and other belongings back underneath the sink.

It’s a simple, inexpensive precaution that could save a lot of frustration and potential water damage.

Here’s my question for fellow homeowners: When was the last time you checked underneath your kitchen or bathroom sink for leaks?

💧 ONE PAPER TOWEL COULD SAVE YOU HUNDREDS!

Here’s a simple professional handyman trick every homeowner should know!

Whenever I finish servicing a kitchen or bathroom sink, I always check for leaks.

But I don’t stop there!

After replacing a faucet, servicing a drain, or installing a garbage disposal, I leave a large paper towel underneath the plumbing.

I ask my clients to leave it there for a couple of days and check for any signs of moisture.

Even a slow drip can leave a telltale water spot!

Once everything stays dry through normal use, it’s safe to restock the cabinet.

✅ Simple
✅ Inexpensive
✅ Easy to monitor
✅ Helps detect hidden leaks early

How do you remove a bathroom mirror that’s glued directly to the wall? Carefully! 🪞

In this Mr. Fix It Tips demonstration, I show how I approach removing a large sheet mirror that appears to be bonded to the wall with mirror adhesive rather than held by mounting clips.

I start by applying painter’s tape across the mirror’s surface, laying down drop cloths, and putting on protective gear. I then use different putty knives to work behind the mirror and gradually break the adhesive bond.

Because the mirror may fracture during removal, preparation and cleanup are essential. I also demonstrate how I handle loose pieces and clean the work area afterward.

⚠️ Important safety reminder: Broken mirror glass can cause serious injuries. Wear appropriate protective equipment, including safety goggles, cut-resistant gloves, and protective clothing. Large or firmly bonded mirrors may require specialized removal techniques. When in doubt, contact a professional glass company.

Planning a gallery wall? Don’t put a single hole in the wall until you’ve done this!

When you’re hanging a collage of photos or artwork, figuring out where everything should go can be one of the hardest parts.

My solution is to create a large paper template on the floor first.

I lay out every piece of artwork on the template, move things around until I have the spacing and arrangement exactly where I want it, and then trace around each piece.

Next, I remove each piece individually and measure from the edge of the artwork to its mounting hardware. Those measurements are transferred onto the corresponding outlines on the paper template.

Now I have a full-size template showing me exactly where every piece belongs and exactly where the mounting hardware needs to go.

I take that completed template to the wall, make sure it’s level and plumb, tape it in place, and install the nails or screws through the marked locations.

Then simply remove the template and hang the artwork.

The important part: I don’t put a single piece of artwork on the wall until the entire layout has been finalized on paper.

Make your mistakes on the paper — not on the wall!

Want to create a gallery wall without putting a bunch of unnecessary holes in your wall?

Here’s the trick: don’t put anything on the wall until you’ve finished the entire layout on the floor.

I create a large paper template that represents the area where the artwork will go. Then I arrange all of the photos and artwork on that template, moving everything around until I like the spacing, scale, and overall design.

Once the layout is finalized, I trace around every piece and transfer the exact locations of the mounting hardware onto the template.

Then — and only then — does the template go onto the wall.

Make sure it’s level and plumb, tape it in place, install your mounting hardware through the marked locations, remove the template, and hang your artwork.

No guessing. No rearranging. And no unnecessary holes in the wall.

That’s how I like to plan a gallery wall!

Which Paint Roller Nap Should I Use? 🎨

The wrong roller nap can leave you with poor coverage, excess splatter, or an uneven finish.

Use this homeowner cheat sheet as a quick reference:

• ¼-inch for very smooth surfaces
• ⅜-inch for walls and ceilings
• ½-inch for lightly textured surfaces
• ¾-inch for rough and exterior surfaces

Save this graphic before your next painting project and share it with someone who needs it.

Small Fixes. Big Results.
