How we find the seat cut on CleanStairs stringers. 📐

Set the square on the second-to-last layout mark (the last mark is the plumb cut at the very bottom). Burn 4-1/2" straight up off the square, then mark the rise for that stair set. That's your seat cut, done the same way every time.

No guessing at the bottom of the stringer, and no stair that rocks on the pad.

Two guys. One tread line. Zero exposed ends. 🔥

James McLaughlin sets each tread assembly onto a TA9Z bracket while Chris Maddox keeps them coming. It all gets locked down and wrapped in AZEK, and you won't find one raw tread end on the whole composite stair.

This is CleanStairs, our system for building composite deck stairs. We didn't invent the bracket-and-block design, but we systemized it and wrapped it so a crew can flow like this.

Toss it. Line it up. Every hole hits. 🎯

These TA9Z brackets drop right onto precision-drilled pilot holes, so there's no guessing and no wandering screws. Every bracket gets locked down with 2-1/2" SDS screws, and every one sits dead-on.

We didn't invent the block-tread design. We systemized it so it comes out this clean every time.

Almost 20 feet of CleanStairs stringers. 😳

Solid stringers, wrapped and ready to go. When the stairs are this long there's no room for guesswork, so every rise and run gets laid out exactly before the first cut.

We didn't invent the block-tread design, but we've systemized it, and the builder manual is almost done.

💾 Save this for your next big stair job.

Your calculator is lying to you. 🧮

Rise, run, then the diagonal. That diagonal (the hypotenuse) is your layout. Say it reads 13 3/8". Don't type in 13 3/8 and hit plus equals. Do the math and let the calculator carry the answer forward.

That 3/8" is rounded. The real number could be a 64th or a 32nd either way. Retype the rounded number and you lose that bit, and over a whole run of steps you end up 3/8" off at the bottom.

This works for traditional hand-cut stringers too. Run the diagonal, line your rise up with it every time, mark it, and cut it. You're not at the mercy of every knot tipping and leaning your square.

💾 Save this before your next stair layout.

Big love to Jeremiah Coffey makes me happy seeing him not only pushing the sytems he help create, at Decks Rx, but doing it under his own Brand!

Most guys eyeball their herringbone layout. We do the math. 🧮

Watch the screen: Construction Master Pro, punch in rise, punch in run, hit Diag. That's your diagonal before the first board goes down. Nail that line and the whole herringbone falls into place.

Square layout, tight joints, no surprises at the end of the run. That's how we set it up for success.

💾 Save this for your next layout.

You don't need two colors to get contrast. 👀

The embossing on AZEK boards catches the light and throws a shadow across the deck, so one color shows real depth and texture. That's a clean, custom look without a two-tone layout.

One board, one color, and plenty of contrast. That's the Decks Rx way.

Found some CleanStairs on a bid today 👀 Solid block treads sitting on Simpson TA9Z brackets, the same design we build. These are just older, painted, and never wrapped.

Here's the thing. You can see treated lumber peeking through in the back, so my guess is these are second-gen stairs. That means the original hand-cut stringers already failed before the deck did, and this set replaced them. If they're original, they're still going to outlast this deck, because the deck is failing and the stairs are rock solid. Either way, that's exactly why CleanStairs makes sense.

I didn't invent this design, but we were the first to really start wrapping it in decking, and we've turned it into a system: the same tough build, finished clean, with no exposed tread ends and no paint to keep up.

The CleanStairs builder manual is about 95% ready. Want on the list? Comment "STAIRS," "BUILDER GUIDE," or "MANUAL." 👇
