Let's Talk About Leaf Blowers! 🍂

Love them or hate them, leaf blowers are a common sight this time of year! But have you ever wondered why they are used?

Fall cleanup is about more than making a garden look tidy. Removing excessive leaves and certain plant debris can help protect lawns, reduce potential pest and disease issues, and prepare gardens for Winter.

As Fine Gardeners, we use a combination of techniques to get the job done. Leaf blowers help us efficiently clear leaves from lawns, garden beds, and hard surfaces, while rakes and hand tools allow us to carefully work around delicate plants and tackle those finer details.

Knowing when to use a blower and when to slow down and work by hand is part of the craft! Every garden is different, and we tailor our approach to the plants, the property, and our clients' preferences.

Our goal isn't simply to move leaves around or make everything look tidy. It's to thoughtfully care for each garden and prepare it for the season ahead.

This month, our Garden Lead, Anna attended CNLP Day at the beautiful Stonecrop Gardens, an educational event hosted through PlantNYS!

So, what is a CNLP? A Certified Nursery & Landscape Professional is someone who has demonstrated their knowledge and skills in the green industry. Maintaining this certification means continuing to learn, earn education credits, and stay current with industry practices.

We love seeing our team invest in their professional growth and bring new knowledge and inspiration back to the gardens we care for every day.

Anna, we're proud to have you on our team and appreciate your commitment to growing. 👏

We’ve officially removed the last of our summer annuals, and what a season it’s been! These containers just kept getting better and better, showing off well into October. Talk about going out on a high note!

But as beautiful as they are all Summer, and Fall taking them apart is a whole different story. Digging out stubborn roots, emptying containers of soil, hauling bags of fresh soil, and moving containers to store away for winter… let's just say it’s harder and more physical than you would think! 💪

And a BIG SHOUTOUT to Karen and Alexa for all their hard work getting the emptying, prepping and storing done this week.

🍂 The Great Fall Garden Debate: To Clean Up or Not to Clean Up?

When it comes to Fall gardens, there are two schools of thought...

🍁 Team Leave It: Leave perennials, grasses, and plant debris standing through winter to provide wildlife habitat, food for birds, and shelter for beneficial insects.

✂️ Team Fall Cleanup: Clear away leaves and decaying plant material, cut back spent perennials where appropriate, and prepare garden beds for Winter. This can help reduce overwintering pests and disease while setting the stage for Spring.

So, where do we stand? We tend to lean toward Fall cleanup! We believe there’s real value in being proactive about garden health and preparing our beds for the season ahead.

That said, every garden and every client is different! We tailor our Fall cleanups to each client's preferences, finding the right balance between tidiness, plant health, and supporting wildlife.

👏 A BIG round of applause for these containers and Mother Nature!

With a big event happening at our client’s house on Sunday, these containers had one very important job: look fabulous and hold it together through party time!

Between the plants putting on a show and Mother Nature cooperating just long enough, they pulled it off! We couldn’t have asked for a better team effort. 😅

We can breathe a sigh of relief now!
