In 2011, Brazilian father Rafael Del Col lost his wife, Tatiane Valques, in a car accident. She was just 27 years old.
Their daughter, Raisa, was not yet one when her mother died, and Tatiane had been pregnant with their second child. Rafael was suddenly facing life as a widower while raising a young daughter who would grow up with limited memories of her mother.
He wanted to find a way to preserve Tatiane’s memory for Raisa. Inspired by American father Ben Nunery, who had recreated photographs with his young daughter after losing his wife to cancer, Rafael came up with a deeply personal tribute.
He returned to the pre-wedding photographs he and Tatiane had taken in 2009. This time, their 3-year-old daughter stood in her mother’s place, wearing the same jewelry and heels Tatiane had worn in the original pictures.
Their family dog, Raul, appeared in both sets of photographs, too. Rafael had originally bought the dog for Tatiane when they first began dating, making his presence another connection to their shared history.
The recreated images and a video of the photo shoot later spread around the world. But behind the photographs was a father trying to give his daughter something meaningful: a way to see her mother as part of the family’s story.
Rafael also wrote about how difficult it was to find support during early widowhood. His experience highlights a need that can be overlooked: people grieving a partner may be trying to cope with their own loss while also helping their children understand theirs.
The photographs could not bring Tatiane back, but they helped preserve a moment from the life she had shared with her family.
