This kitchen in Kittrell, NC needed a little more than just a color change!
We recently wrapped up this project, and it’s a good example of why proper preparation makes such a difference when refinishing cabinets.
The cabinets had been painted before, but the old finish was starting to yellow, and we found areas where the paint was failing and peeling away.
Before we could even think about applying a new color, we had to address those problem areas. Painting over failing paint doesn’t fix anything. You have to get the surface properly prepared first.
Once everything was cleaned, sanded, repaired, and primed, we refinished the kitchen using our industrial 2K cabinet coating system.
The homeowners chose three Sherwin-Williams colors:
Kitchen cabinets: Light French Gray
Kitchen island: Dovetail
Bathroom vanities: Snowbound
I really like how these colors worked together. Light French Gray gives the kitchen a softer, updated look, while Dovetail adds a little more depth to the island without going too dark.
We also refinished the bathroom vanities in Snowbound for a fresh, clean finish.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that not every cabinet painting project starts with bare wood. Sometimes we’re dealing with someone else’s previous paint job, and those projects can take considerably more preparation.
But seeing everything come together at the end makes the extra work worth it.

Take a look at the pictures, especially the areas where the old paint was failing. It’s a good reminder that what goes underneath the finish matters just as much as the color you choose.
