The fences that crack first
They all have one thing in common.
They were never protected.
Bare wood in the sun dries out fast.
Then rain soaks in.
Then the sun dries it out again.
That cycle over and over is what makes boards split and crack.
Stain helps slow that cycle down.
It helps keep water out and blocks some of the sun.
So the wood doesn't swing back and forth as hard.
No protection means the cycle never stops.
And the cracks keep growing.

A homeowner called me last week.
She was sure she needed a whole new fence.
Gray boards, a few cracks, looked rough.
But most of the fence wasn't rotted and just needed to be stained
A lot of fences look worse than they are.
Before you pay for a replacement, get someone to look at it honestly.
You might be surprised what can be saved.

You don't think about your fence when it's fine.
You don't think about it when it starts turning gray.
You barely notice the first few cracks.
Then one day a board breaks.
Or a section leans.
Or the HOA sends a letter.
And suddenly you're getting quotes to replace the whole thing.
Here's how to never get there.
Check it once a year.
Do the water test.
Stain before it gets bad.
A fence you take care of is a fence you don't have to replace.

A new fence isn't ready on day one
Just got a new fence?
It probably needs some time before it's ready for stain.
A lot of new wood, especially pressure-treated, still has moisture in it.
If you stain too soon, the stain can't soak in the way it should.
But wait too long and the sun starts graying it.
So there's a window.
Not too early.
Not too late.
That timing is one of the biggest things people get wrong with a brand-new fence.
If you're not sure where yours is, ask before you stain.

It's turning gray.

Water soaks in instead of beading up.

The boards are starting to look dry or rough.

You see small cracks or splitting starting.

Most people miss #2.
Here's an easy test.
Splash some water on the fence.
If it beads up, the wood still has protection.
If it darkens and soaks right in, the wood is open and needs stain.
Catching it early is way cheaper than waiting until boards need replacing.

#1 happens before you even open the can.
Staining dirty or wet wood. The stain can't soak in, so it peels.

Staining in direct afternoon sun. It dries too fast and leaves blotchy spots. [CONFIRM]

Putting on too much. Extra stain that doesn't soak in turns sticky and starts to flake.

Most DIY jobs that fail come down to one of these three.
None of them are about the stain itself.
They're all about how it goes on.

Paint sits on top of the wood like a shell.
Stain is made to soak into it.
That's a big difference outside.
When paint fails, it cracks and peels in big ugly sheets.
When a good stain wears, it fades more evenly over time. [CONFIRM]
That makes it easier to keep up with.
And wood needs to breathe a little with Texas heat and moisture.
That's why most wood fences get stained, not painted.
They do completely different jobs.

Most people think stain is just color.
It's not.
A good stain soaks into the wood and does a few jobs at once.
It helps block UV from the sun.
It helps keep water from soaking in.
It slows down the graying, cracking, and warping you see on old fences.
That gray color on your fence?
That's sun damage on the surface of the wood.
So when you stain, you're not just making it look nice.
You're giving the wood a layer of protection it doesn't have on its own.
Bare wood in Texas sun doesn't stand a chance for long.

10/25/2026

It's not the brand.
It's not the color.
It's not even how many coats you put on.
It's the prep.
If the wood is dirty, wet, or covered in old flaking stain, the new stain has nothing to grab onto.
So it sits on top instead of soaking in.
And anything sitting on top is going to peel, fade, or wash off way faster.
Clean wood.
Dry wood.
Then stain.
That order is the whole game.
Skip the first two and you're paying for a stain job that won't last.
