Known in its native home soils throughout Sub-Tropical East Africa, Ruttya fruticosa is commonly known as Jembekkie' or Jamny Mouth". Here in the states we usually call them Rabbit Ears mainly because of their unusual reddish-orange or golden flowers that feature two tufted-points to the tips of their flower petals that really do resemble a bunny's head and ears! Rabbit Ears is a somewhat woody, twining, vining shrub that prefers to sprawl outward and colonize their surroundings- occasionally using other pants or trellis' as its means of supporting their own sheer weight. The Ruttya genus' blossoms are shaped such to hold onto as much fragrant nectar as possible. They are an incredible attractor of Hummingbirds and most other local long-tongued not loving pollinators too! In East Africa, people have been harvesting this plants' flowers and seedpods for generations to eat as fresh snacks, fried in dough, or turned into a sweet blackberry-like pasty jam. This plant has a moderately average watering requirement, preferring a somewhat regula damp level, well-draining, slightly-acidic, loamy soil. Rabbit Ears bloom almost any time of year, but are especially happy during the warmer and wetter summer growing season. Plant yours in the full sunshine or a partially shaded / dappled location. and with only a bit of consistency your Rabbit Ears will quickly become this seasons conversation piece in your garden!
