The worst time to find out your roofing project costs more is when your old roof is already off.

Jason is back in Bayside, Queens, talking about something every homeowner should understand before hiring a contractor: unexpected costs.

What happens when the roof is stripped and suddenly you're told there are additional layers to remove or rotted plywood that needs replacing?

At Major Homes, we discuss those possibilities upfront, explain the potential costs and establish a maximum out-of-pocket amount so homeowners can make informed decisions before the work begins.

The most important part of a siding job might be something you'll never see.

Jason shows us how Major Homes seals the areas around windows during a siding installation, using aluminum capping, carefully positioned channels and specialized sealing tape to help prevent water from getting behind the exterior.

It's an extra step that takes more time and material, but it's part of how we approach every siding project, regardless of which material the homeowner chooses.

A beautiful exterior is important. Making sure it's properly protected is just as important.

Thinking about replacing your siding? Contact Major Homes for a free consultation and find out what goes into an installation that's done right from the start.

100-year-old stucco doesn't mean you're stuck with a 100-year-old exterior.

Jason takes us behind the scenes of a Major Homes siding project where the homeowners are ready to move on from maintaining their original cement stucco.

Instead of removing it all, our crew is installing wood furring strips to create a framework, adding insulation and then installing new siding over the existing exterior.

The result will be a clean, updated appearance without having to tear off all that old stucco.

Take a look at how we're making it happen.

This Tudor-style home in Bayside, Queens, is about to look very different.

Mitch takes us through day one of a Major Homes renovation where we're updating an older stucco exterior with new vinyl siding.

Rather than going through the expense of restoring and repainting the existing exterior, the homeowners chose a different approach. Our crew will install wood furring strips, add insulation and finish the house with new vinyl siding.

We'll be following this project as the work progresses, showing what goes into the installation and how the home comes together.

Take a look at where we're starting.

Roofing has come a long way, and our backs are thankful for it.

Jason gives us a look at one of the pieces of equipment that makes a big difference on a roofing project: the shingle conveyor.

Years ago, crews carried bundles of shingles up the ladder a few at a time. Today, this machine delivers them directly to the roof, making the process faster and much more efficient.

And judging by Jason's reaction, he might be a little jealous that the shingles get a ride and he doesn't.

Sometimes the best advice we can give a homeowner is not to hire us for the job they called about.

Jason recently visited a homeowner who wanted new siding to help reduce noise inside their house. After taking a look, he found that the bigger issue was the old windows, which weren't closing or sealing properly.

Replacing the siding wasn't going to solve the problem they were trying to fix, and he told them exactly that.

At Major Homes, we'd rather explain what your home actually needs than sell you a renovation that won't accomplish what you wanted in the first place.

Solar panels on a failing roof can become a very expensive mistake.

Jason is on a homeowner's roof where solar panels were installed despite the roof already being in poor condition. Now there are leaks, and repairing the roof means paying to have those panels removed and reinstalled.

It's an expense the homeowner could potentially have avoided with a proper roofing inspection before the solar installation.

If you're considering solar, have an experienced roofer evaluate your roof first. Make sure the roof underneath those panels is ready for the years ahead.

There’s a lot happening on this exterior, but nothing feels like it was added as an afterthought.

Jason takes us around a recently completed Major Homes renovation featuring Ascend composite clad siding, black windows and trim, limestone accents, black gutters and fascia, and white soffits.

Even the shape and placement of the ellipse window was part of the design developed before the work began.

Different materials, colors and details, all designed to work together as one finished exterior.

There are plenty of ways to deal with a leaking roof. Tape isn't one of them.

Jason found missing shingles, shingles sliding out of place and previous repairs that aren't going to solve the underlying problem.

But there's another important point here: water getting into your house doesn't automatically mean the roof is the culprit.

A deteriorating chimney with missing mortar, loose bricks and open gaps can allow wind-driven rain right into the house.

Finding the source of the leak comes first. Fixing it properly comes next.

Protecting your home is part of the roofing job, not an afterthought.

Before the tear-off begins, Rafael shows one of the first steps the Major Homes crew takes: covering and protecting the areas around the house.

Roof removal gets messy. Shingles, debris and nails are coming down, so tarps are placed around the property and extra attention is given to landscaping and other areas that could be damaged during the work.

The new roof matters. How your property is treated while we're installing it matters too.
