Growing Hobby Succulents, cacti, bonsai, tropical, carnivorous plants, and decor galore at Growing Hobby! Growing Hobby "grew" from the uncertain and stressful year of 2020.

As I began collecting succulents, I felt the need to share the joy and "zen" I felt from working with them. The farmers market booth opened in March of 2021, and I've been having fun ever since! Come visit, wander, and enjoy the peaceful feeling of Growing Hobby.

Confined to hidden sinkhole lakes in the Panhandle, the Florida threadleaf sundew is both a discovery and a warning bell for a vanishing ecosystem that’s long been ignored

EVENING PRIMROSE: A native flower with a history worth sharing!

Common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis) is native to South Carolina, with deep connections to food and traditional herbal practices.

The Cherokee, Iroquois, Ojibwas, and Potawatomi were among several Native American tribes that used common evening-primrose for both
food and for medicinal purposes. The roots were boiled and eaten like potatoes. The young leaves were cooked and served as greens. The shoots were eaten raw. A tea was made from the plant and used as a dietary aid or stimulant to treat laziness and “overfatness.” A hot poultice made from the pounded roots was applied externally to treat piles and boils. A poultice made from the entire plant was used to treat bruises. The roots were chewed and rubbed onto the muscles to improve strength. The plant was used to treat pain associated with menstruation as well as bowel pain. Handfuls of people still use the plant today, medicinally and for food.

As dusk falls, its yellow flowers open to welcome night-flying moths, then remain available for early-morning bees. A beautiful reminder that native plants connect our gardens with both cultural history and the natural world.
