From the sketchbook straight to your home!

On Monday, our team kicked off an internal design competition, sketching ideas for a “drop-zone tray” to hold everyday essentials like keys, wallets and phones. The goal? Create something that could eventually be made and sold through our Etsy shop, modus things!

This Friday, a group of University of Arkansas students will help judge the designs, pick the Top 3, and then you'll decide the winner!

Check out our Instagram Story next Monday to vote for your favorite of the Top 3! The winning design will be heading into production in the modus shop and launching on our Etsy soon after!

Before becoming the Co-Op we know today, this building was a former IGA grocery store along College Avenue. Swipe to the end to see where it started.

Rather than starting over, the design gave the existing building a new life. The original masonry was reused, the entrance was moved to a more prominent corner, and a 117-foot covered porch transformed what had been a car-focused edge into a place for people to sit, gather and connect.

Completed in 2020, the project turned an existing grocery store into a community hub rooted in a simple idea: everyone welcome.

From scholarship recipient to architecture student! 🎓📐

Earlier this year, modus studio awarded Emily Snell, a recent graduate from Bentonville High School, our $2,000 scholarship supporting Arkansas students pursuing a future in the built environment. Now, we’re checking in to see how her first semester of architecture school is going!

Emily recently wrapped up her first project of the semester and shared that her favorite class so far has been Fundamental Design Skills studio. The studio has challenged her to think deeply about her work, expand her architectural thinking, and grow as a designer. Her current project explores how simple elements can come together to define a space, evolving from basic folds into a complex series of modules and planes.

She’s also been surprised by the wide variety of skills and considerations involved in the design process and is excited to continue developing her digital modeling skills in Rhino.

Her advice to future architecture students? Practice sketching and take time to learn as much about architecture as you can.
We’re proud to invest in students like Emily who are passionate about shaping the places and communities around us, and we can’t wait to see where her creativity takes her next!

Interested in pursuing a future in architecture, interior design, or landscape architecture? We will offer our scholarship again in Spring 2027 for a graduating Arkansas high school senior planning to attend an in-state college or university. More details and application information will be shared in the spring.

Keep up the great work, Emily!

We’re honored to be recognized by Forbes on its 2026 America’s Top 200 Residential Architects and America’s Best-in-State Residential Architects lists.

Our residential work is rooted in the people who live there, the character of the site, and an exploration of material and craft.

That approach is evident in Chateauzark, a 2025 waterside retreat on Beaver Lake that transforms a 1976 lake house through renovation and a modern addition. The new wing marks the first residential use of Southern Yellow Pine cross-laminated timber in Arkansas, pairing mass timber construction with corrugated weathering steel and forms abstracted from the region’s vernacular architecture. Oriented toward expansive lake views, the home brings together adaptive reuse, material experimentation and a strong connection to the Ozark landscape.

We’re honored to see LifeHouse recognized as the 2026 ASID FOCUS Community Award Medium Firm Winner.

Designed as a home for pregnant women experiencing homelessness, LifeHouse began with a simple but important idea: a secure environment can also feel warm, welcoming, and dignified.

The FOCUS Project Awards recognize projects that demonstrate the core values of the design profession, with the Community category celebrating design that strengthens the communities it serves. We’re grateful to see LifeHouse and its mission recognized on a national level, and to everyone who helped bring it to life.

Read more about the 2026 ASID National Award recipients here: https://www.asid.org/news/asid-celebrates-2026-national-award-winners

To help bring the spaces at LifeHouse to life while respecting the privacy of the mothers and children it serves, people shown in select images are digitally generated and do not depict actual residents.
