A charcoal island gives a light kitchen its center.

Soft perimeter cabinetry, a geometric marble backsplash and a charcoal island with room for four. A kitchen that stays calm and still has a clear focal point.

Two open shelves did more for this kitchen than another row of uppers.

Floating shelves break up a long wall of cabinetry and give everyday pieces a home. Here they sit beside a beverage center, above natural wood lowers and across from an island sink with seating for three.

Hosting season starts at the bar.

Glass-front uppers with interior lighting put the glassware on display, w**e storage sits right where guests gather, and a black stone top with a lower table extension turns the bar into a place to linger. Wet bar cabinetry and countertops, designed and built by our team.

Two cabinet colors, one quiet room.

Darker lowers ground the kitchen and hide the wear of everyday life, while lighter uppers keep the room open. A patterned quartz on the counters and island carries both tones, and a capiz chandelier softens the whole space.

Deeper lowers or all one color? Tell us which way you lean.

Slate lowers, light uppers, and a quartz with movement.

A quick walk through a kitchen built on contrast: deep green-gray base cabinets, soft greige uppers, a glass subway backsplash and a patterned quartz that ties the island to the perimeter. Designed, supplied and installed by one team in Fairfax.

Booking a bathroom in September is what makes it usable by the holidays.

Design, ordering, and installation each take their own time, and the fall calendar fills faster than most people expect. This project paired a stained wood double vanity with a marble-look quartz top, lit mirrors that make mornings easier, and a freestanding tub set against tile that carries the warm tone all the way around the room. Timelines depend on scope and material lead times, so the sooner we measure, the better your dates look.

Before you pick an island size, count the drawers you actually need.

This one carries deep drawers on the seating side and cabinet storage behind, which is where the mixing bowls, sheet pans, and small appliances went. All of it used to live on the counter. A darker stain on the island handles daily traffic better than a light finish in a busy family kitchen, and under-cabinet lighting on the perimeter keeps the prep zones bright without adding a single visible fixture.

Tell us what never fits in your kitchen and we'll tell you where it belongs.

The details people forget until the walls are already closed.

A heated towel bar needs an electrical rough-in behind the tile. A floor-mounted tub filler needs its supply lines placed before anyone sets a single piece of stone. Neither one costs much at the framing stage. Both are a real problem afterward.

Which of the two would you add to your bathroom? Comment below.

Light oak has quietly taken over Northern Virginia kitchens.

Flat-panel doors, a matching wood hood, and long slim pulls keep the entire run reading as one continuous surface instead of a row of cabinets. The quartzite counter brings movement without bringing color, which is why it can stretch across an island this long without feeling busy. Stacked gray tile in the background is texture you notice second, and that order matters.

Warm oak or crisp white for your next kitchen? We'd like to hear it.

The best storage in this bathroom takes up zero floor space.

A recessed niche is framed between existing studs, so it borrows depth from the wall instead of the room. Wood shelves add warmth against flat white paint, and an LED strip under each shelf keeps the column lit at night without a separate fixture. The one catch: it has to be planned before drywall. Once the wall is closed and the plumbing is set, adding a niche means opening it all back up.

Save this for your bathroom planning list.
