Not every hazard tree needs to be fully removed! Trees with cavities are important for a variety of wildlife including flying squirrels, woodpeckers, owls, bats, raccoons, and other critters. If your tree is away from structures and frequented areas, you can leave it standing for wildlife. Another option is to lower the hieght of the tree to reduce the likelihood of falling on structures or people.

It was a beautiful day to volunteer at the Highground Veterans Memorial Park in Neilsville, WI for the Saluting Branches National Day of Service. We had several tree companies from the area join us including Arbor Oaks Tree Service, Wellner Arboriculture, and Zielies Tree Service. We volunteered our time and equipment to take down hazardous trees, prune shade trees in the picnic area, expand lawn areas for the park, cut firewood for veterans in need, and dump mulch for the trail system within the park.

Thank you to everyone who sponsored this program and the other tree services who volunteered to make this day successful.

Fun Fact Friday!

This is a burl in a black cherry tree. This lump is sort of like a tumor but does not usually cause problems for the tree. They appear after the tree was injured in some way, whether that was physical, fungal, bacterial, or viral. It is the tree's way of dealing with the injury. By compartmentalizing around the wound in different directions, it creates a very dense and rounded shape. As the tree continues to grow, so does the burl.

These burls are highly sought after in the wood working industry. Each one has their own unique grain pattern and can be made into pieces of furniture or kitchen dishes and utensils.

This particular silver maple tree has been declining for years and has had several storm damage breakouts. The homeowner did the right thing by choosing to have it removed. With its proximity to their house, the neighbors house, the sidewalk, and the power lines, there were simply too many targets and the risk just wasn't worth it to keep.

The Japanese Beetle is an invasive insect that originates from... you guessed it! Japan! These little beetles are more of an aesthetic nuisance than an actual threat to your trees. However, they can skeletonize large amounts of foliage on a single tree, leaving it vulnerable to other forms of stress and problems. The repeated defoliation year after year will eventually take a toll on a tree and can lead to its decline. Defoliation is especially hard on juveline trees as they have smaller energy reserves.
