Good Morning!
Exciting news this week is the PACT clothing restock! We also found Texas organically grown corn on the cob!
Our produce section is coming along as we find more local sources. We just had a breakthrough last week in sourcing, which will add more variety to the table.
The big box store produce woes are making the rounds again on DS Neighbors. We truly appreciate it when you mention us on those posts.
The big box store sources a lot from Texas, but most of it is bigger ag and conventional. Though Texas has a lot of small, local regenerative farmers, Big Ag is still very strong. We have access to conventional Texas produce farms, we just don't source from them.
USDA organic produce does deteriorate quicker than conventional, because they don't use the same type of preservation methods. The produce is typically still preserved in some way by an USDA approved method for organics. Otherwise, it won't make it from another state or country to here.
If you want cleaner, you have to buy seasonal and organically grown locally.
If we can’t get something organically grown locally, we will source USDA organics; because our customers have asked for it. We get it. Their kids eat berries- a lot of berries! They want a lemon to make homemade mayo now and don't want to stop at two stores to make mayo.
However, we are having a heck of a time with getting fresh USDA organic produce. We reject a lot of it. We won't even order bananas anymore, which was what got the community fired up last week.
However, the community is talking about produce as a whole, not just organics. Someone even mentioned problems with chicken. So there’s a breakdown in the Big Ag system on both the conventional and USDA organics.
One of the conversations as the growing year is coming to a close is what next year looks like at our own farm. We’ve gone through a restructuring phase at the farm and have hired the right help. We are already seeing progress and planning for 2027.
This summer we had a customer bring us a picture of USDA organic berries she bought from a big box store and berries she bought from us we sourced from a local farm. She had washed them and the USDA organic berries had wilted a bit under the preservative barrier being lifted. The farm-fresh berries from us were still plump.
She was so happy to know she was receiving super fresh produce. That image has burned in my mind and been part of my goals. It’s impossible to provide local farm fresh berries year round, but we can do our best for a season.
We hope you enjoyed the weekend and are adjusting to the time change. The rain was perfect for the garden and a cozy setting for good food, college football, and family.
The Lord's blessings are all around- especially at Home Grown. We are blessed to have so many great people come see us each week.
We are looking forward to another week of serving the community. See you soon! :)
