It’s finally Friday!!!

Did you know that October is National Disability Enjoyment Awareness Month?

Many of us struggle to find full time jobs and honestly even part time in this economy. But for someone with a disability, it’s even worse. We often don’t get the chance to prove our worth cause a hiring manager has already decided that we are too expensive. All we want is a chance. Sit down and talk with us. Research options for accommodations. I bet we will surprise you.

Deafness is a spectrum. You can be born Deaf, become Deaf as a child or an adult. It’s not THAT uncommon for someone to be Deaf at age 20. Stop acting like it’s impossible!

Anyone have fun comebacks for this kind of comment??!

It’s Ask The Sassy Baker Friday!! Ask any questions related to baking, ASL, Deaf culture or my background as a Black Deaf woman. Don’t ask me questions about science or math. I’m not an expert.

When a Deaf person asks for an accommodation and you say “you don’t need”…that’s a problem. Don’t tell us we don’t need a specific accommodation. Great to know there are captions or whatever but an interpreter can often make a huge difference in how we interact and information we take with us after the event.

If we are unsure if we will be able to enjoy/get something out of the event, we ain’t going.

How much do you know about Franklin D Rosevelt? I didn’t know much before seeing FDR’s A Very Happy Hour play at the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

The coolest part? One of the leading roles is Deaf and signs her lines PLUS have ASL interpreters without having to access for access!!!! 🤯

FDR is plays by a woman who is a wheelchair user. Authentic representation was done so well in so many ways. So rare to see these days.
You gotta go see it!

Continuing the conversation from last week…

Finding common ground is great but when it diminishes people’s uniqueness then it becomes a problem. We are all unique. Just because you meet a Deaf person who lip reads doesn’t mean everyone does. Just because you meet a Deaf person who signs three different sign languages doesn’t mean everyone does. Get to know the person in front of you without putting expectations on them.
