Fall is the season for warm wood, and this Vestavia Drive kitchen has plenty of it.

The cabinets are rustic alder in a Barn Wood finish. Alder has a soft grain and natural knots, so every door looks a little different, and that's a big part of its charm. Darker tall cabinets on each side of the range frame the cooking wall, and wooden panels on the appliances let them blend right into the cabinetry.

There are some clever details here, too: a flip-down knife holder tucked under the upper cabinets (swipe to see it), brackets under the uppers, extended end panels and a walk-through pantry. It's a kitchen with real character, and it's made for cooking.

Wood tones like this are hard to judge on a phone screen. In person, you can see how the color shifts with the grain and the light, which is why it's worth looking at samples before you decide.

Thinking about new cabinets but not sure where to start? Here's how a Providence project works, in five steps.

1. Showroom consultation. We meet at our Decatur showroom, get to know each other, and talk through your ideas, your plans and your budget.
2. On-site project review. We come to your home to verify measurements, take photos and gather what we need for the design.
3. Preliminary review. Back at the showroom, you'll see the first designs and start choosing materials.
4. Finalize designs and selections. Final revisions, construction drawings and a formal proposal.
5. Construction phase. A hand-off meeting with your project manager, materials ordered, and the project managed from there.

One helpful hint before step 1: make a dreamboard on Houzz or Pinterest with photos of rooms you love. It helps you and our designers get on the same page right away.

Most projects are completed in 4 to 10 weeks. Over the coming weeks, we'll walk through each step in more detail, because knowing what comes next makes the whole thing feel a lot lighter.

Welcome to the Providence Cabinetry & Design page, and thank you for stopping by.

We're starting with a kitchen in a family home on Country Club Rd in Decatur. The cabinets are painted Dovetail Grey, a soft gray that stays warm next to the wood floors, and brushed gold hardware adds a little glow. The cabinetry runs up to the ceiling, glass-front uppers show off the everyday dishes, and a cabinet-style range hood frames the herringbone brick behind the cooktop. A long island gives everyone a place to land while dinner comes together.

There's a lot of hard-working storage tucked inside, too: spice and utensil pull-outs, a trash pull-out, a lazy Susan and a cookie sheet divider. Those small choices are what make a kitchen easier to live in every day.

Over the next few months, we'll share real projects from around North Alabama, the paint colors and stains behind them, and how a cabinet project works, one step at a time. We hope it makes your first visit to our Decatur showroom feel easy and familiar.
