National Kitchen and Bath Month closes out tomorrow, and by evening the neighborhoods will be full of very small ghosts.

If you'll be handing out candy in a kitchen you've been redesigning in your head all month, we'd love to hear about it. Most of our clients describe the same moment, where something ordinary happens in the room and they suddenly see exactly what it could be.

A happy Halloween from all of us.

Not every bathroom needs to start over.

Bathroom Revive is for the room whose layout you like and whose finishes have stopped feeling like you. We refinish, reface, and restore what's already working, and the pan and the plumbing stay exactly where they are. A corner bench often fits neatly into a project like this, which is how a number of our clients finally get the one feature they'd been wanting.

It's also how plenty of our relationships begin, with a smaller project before a larger one.

Selections go better in person, which is why we have a design studio on Payne Street rather than a catalog and a phone call.

There's something about holding a cabinet door and setting tile against stone under real light that a screen can't give you. Your designer pulls three more options because the first one sparked something, and clients tell us this is the part of the process they didn't expect to enjoy as much as they did.

Sage cabinet samples are out right now if you've been curious about color.

It's National Color Day, which feels like a fair excuse to talk about the decision our clients agonize over most.

Sage green is the one we keep coming back to this year. It sits happily in a transitional house and a midcentury one, and the trick is pairing it with warmth rather than more cool tones, so we'll set natural wood shelving and brushed gold hardware against a warm-toned counter. In a south-facing Dallas kitchen it settles into something calm you won't tire of.

If committing the whole room feels like a lot, the island is a lovely place to start. You live with the color every day and it never takes over.

A magic corner is one of those things you don't know you want until you've used one.

The fitting pulls the contents of a blind corner all the way out to meet you, so the deepest and most forgotten part of a kitchen becomes the place your stock pots live. Add full extension drawers and soft close hardware alongside it and the entire lower half of your kitchen starts behaving differently.

Storage is the part of a kitchen people underestimate at the design stage and appreciate most a year later.

Somewhere in almost every bathroom design meeting, a client tells us they'd love a place to sit in the shower.

Shaving is a reason we hear often, though it's rarely the only one. Just as frequently it's a homeowner planning to stay in this house another thirty years who wants the shower to work just as beautifully then as it does today.

We pulled together six benches we design regularly, from a floating tile bench that makes the whole shower read larger to a slab carried straight over from your vanity stone. A bench shapes your framing and waterproofing, so it's a lovely thing to bring into the conversation early.

If you're picturing your family with a new space for the holidays next year, this is the month that conversation starts.

Good design takes time, and so do selections. Cabinetry and stone get ordered after a final measure rather than before, which is how you avoid the surprises nobody enjoys. Beginning now means the calendar works in your favor instead of against it.

Ask us what's realistic for your home and your timing and you'll get an honest answer, even when the honest answer is next spring.

A whole project, condensed into about twenty seconds.

This Dallas kitchen came to us dark and closed off from the rest of the house. The photo misses the part our clients bring up afterward. They knew what was happening in their home every single week it was going on.

If you've been circling a project of your own, we'd love to hear about it.

The best kitchens we design work as well in twenty years as they do the week we finish them.

That usually comes down to decisions nobody notices. We put drawers where lower cabinets would go, so the pots come to you rather than the other way around, and we widen the walkways from a standard 36 inches to somewhere between 42 and 48. The microwave lands at counter height instead of over the range, and the lighting gets layered so the counter is bright exactly where you're chopping.

Done properly, it just looks like a kitchen somebody thought carefully about.
