Before anything is built, there are hours like these: the team gathered around the first floor plans, flipping back through client notes, remembering the offhand comment about morning light or the holiday parties you envision hosting.

We dream about what’s possible, then we get specific. We consider the smallest details, because in a home made for how you live, nothing is too small to matter.

These are the design hours that make a space custom. Time spent listening, thinking, and drawing, long before the first wall goes up.

Much of what makes an SDG home custom happens where no one sees it. In the design hours before a single wall goes up, the team pores over the plan with the client’s story and taste in mind. Those hours are where custom actually happens. At SDG, we are genuinely curious. It isn’t a mood. There are some projects that stick with you, and this is one of them. From the overall layout to the smaller design details, every part of this space was thoughtfully considered to create a home that felt cohesive, functional, and completely personal to the homeowner.

The finished space is one thing. Seeing where it started? That’s the fun part.

This project required more than a fresh coat of paint and new finishes. We reworked the layout, took down walls, and completely rethought how the space could function.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is bringing a designer into a project too late.

By the time construction starts, a lot of important decisions have already been made and changing them later can be expensive, frustrating, or sometimes impossible.

Bringing your designer in early means we can think through the space as a whole: how it functions, how the rooms connect, where the lighting and electrical need to go, what materials make sense, and how everything comes together.

It’s not just about picking finishes.

It’s about making the right decisions before they become expensive decisions.

That’s why we believe interior design should be part of the conversation from the very beginning.

A dining room doesn’t always have to stay a dining room. For this project, we reimagined the space entirely by turning an unused dining area into a kitchen that better serves the way our clients live.

Good design is about seeing the bigger picture.

When we approach a renovation or new construction project, we’re not asking, “How should we design this room?”

We’re asking, “How should this entire home feel?”

That means considering how spaces connect, what you see from one room into another, how materials and colors carry throughout the home, and how architectural details create continuity.

A kitchen shouldn’t feel disconnected from the living space. A hallway shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. And each room shouldn’t feel like it belongs to a completely different house.

Every space can have its own personality while still contributing to one cohesive experience.
