Garvin Design Group

Garvin Design Group is a full service architecture, interiors, and planning firm in South Carolina.

Winner of AIA South Carolina’s prestigious Firm Award in 2019, Garvin Design Group has proudly served the state of South Carolina since 2003. Garvin Design Group commands a portfolio of architecture, interior design, and planning work that includes higher education, multifamily residential, hospitality, K12 education, commercial and retail, and religious project types. Our clients say our commitment to collaborative design, ability to anticipate potential project challenges, and fun-loving attitude make us their go-to design partners. Historic projects and messy renovations are a particular area of expertise for our firm: we have earned more than 24 awards for historic preservation/adaptive reuse. We know firsthand how challenging these projects can be: we designed the comprehensive rehabilitation of Columbia’s historic AIS building (now known as Gervais Place) that now houses our studio and other businesses. Our in-house historic consulting and design services help project teams successfully pursue federal, state, and local tax credits for historic preservation and adaptive reuse. Our firm of 23 people is strategically located in the heart of Columbia’s historic Vista arts and entertainment district but we work all over the state of South Carolina. From the Lowcountry to the Upstate, from small retail upfit projects to major, large-scale historic mill rehabilitation, Garvin Design Group is proud of the role we have played in the state’s continued success.

Yesterday marked both a groundbreaking and a homecoming: we returned to Scott’s hometown to officially kick off the rehabilitation of Hotel Aiken with our project partners and Aiken community members. This ambitious project will transform an entire city block in downtown Aiken by reviving multiple landmark historic buildings and adding strategic new construction. We’re honored to help preserve Aiken’s rich history and shape an exciting future for downtown.

This one’s a home run.

The University of South Carolina Baseball locker room at Founders Park has been transformed into a sophisticated, high-energy space that celebrates Gamecock pride and the program’s championship legacy. The renovation features 39 custom-designed player lockers, vibrant garnet accents, integrated LED lighting, and personalized details that enhance both functionality and aesthetics. A striking media wall with sculptural wood details, championship-inspired photographic murals, and the iconic interlocking “SC” logo adds warmth, movement, and school spirit to the space.

It’s a modern facility that honors South Carolina Baseball’s celebrated history while supporting the needs of today’s players.

A grand new chapter is just beginning.

This morning we joined Homeless No More for a special groundbreaking ceremony for Grand Village, an exciting new affordable housing community at the corner of Beltline Boulevard and Two Notch Road in Columbia. The Grand Village project will transform the site of the former Grand Motel into a vibrant residential community featuring 30 apartments and the Christopher Community Center, named in memory of the late Jim Christopher, a dedicated champion of Homeless No More's mission.

The development combines four new residential buildings with the rehabilitation of two existing motel buildings, bringing new life to a long-blighted property. Bold colors, contemporary architecture, and the restoration of the Grand Motel's iconic monumental sign will create a distinctive community that honors the site's history while embracing its future.

Congratulations to Homeless No More and all of its partners on this significant milestone. We're proud to be part of a project that demonstrates the power of thoughtful design to transform places, strengthen communities, and create new opportunities for Columbia residents.

Swipe through to see what's coming to Grand Village.

Today, we joined our project partners Hood Construction and Flad Architects at Coastal Carolina University for the groundbreaking of the Health and Human Performance Center!

This exciting event marks a major milestone for the project and for CCU. We can’t wait to see the impact this new facility will have on the campus and community for years to come.
