A Dumb Supper is a meal eaten in silence. In modern Samhain witchcraft, it has become a way to honour ancestors and loved ones who have died.
An additional place is set at the table, sometimes accompanied by a photograph, a favourite meal or a personal keepsake.
The meal is shared without conversation, allowing time for reflection and remembrance.
Historically, Dumb Suppers were also associated with folk divination, particularly attempts to discover a future spouse. Their use as an ancestor-remembrance ritual is a more recent adaptation.
Some witches believe the spirits of their ancestors may visit during Samhain, while others observe the ritual purely as an act of remembrance.
The practice does not require elaborate offerings or ceremonies. A simple meal, an empty chair and a moment of silence are enough.
The chair may be empty, but the memories it represents remain.
