This is only this pullet’s 6th egg (maybe 5th..) Hatched from my birds earlier this Spring. I just can’t believe it 🤩 It sounds silly if you’re not as obsessed with chickens as some of us, but I’ve been working towards this for years 🥲

I found some rhubarb listed on Marketplace yesterday and I was already heading to the same town to pick up chickens, so it just seemed like the perfect time to add rhubarb to my beds!

I met the sweetest woman and the 4 plants that I bought turned into so many more! We dug up 4 “clumps” and there were 8 established plants and a few smaller ones in there too. 😳 I didn’t want to take up any more of my beds so I planted the 8 and will be offering the others to a friend if she wants to see if they make it.

The world seems to be a crazy place, and trust me I can catastrocize with the best of them 😅 but then you meet the sweetest woman who shares her rhubarb and it all seems okay again ❤️

- I cut off the tops of the rhubarb so that hopefully the roots spend what little time they have before freeze in establishing themselves. This also stresses the plant out less because it has a lot less moisture loss due to it not trying to keep the green parts alive. Or at least this is my theory.. we’ll see how well it works!-

We have a new pullet laying! 🤩
This is only her second egg and it’s darker than her first. I’m hoping she keeps getting darker and darker but this is a very promising start 🥰

I learned how to trim horses about 8 years ago out of necessity. I had found my mentor, the incredible Ida Hammer (who’s not only a great trimmer and horsewoman, but person in general) after someone messed up my horse pretty bad. Then I had the wild idea to move to Kentucky so I went through her classes just so that I could trim Bo for a couple months. He was right in the middle of her working her magic on him to get him comfortable again. Little did I know, what was supposed to be two classes, turned into a whole certification program and career.

Now I only trim about 10 horses a month, but love it all the same, and I’m so appreciative that this is one more thing that I don’t have to outsource.

I think a lot of people that homestead tend to adapt the idea that if there’s a skill they can learn, it’s better to learn it and do something themselves than it is to rely on someone else. I was so fortunate to have the teachers and mentors I’ve had. I took a little video yesterday because there’s just something fun about watching yourself do something that you love. Especially when learning it kind of terrified you 😅 I tried to pay Ida to trim Bo many times after I was certified and technically could even start trimming other people’s horses. Unfortunately/thankfully she always told me no 🤪

What’s one thing you’ve learned that once terrified you? I have a long list, but this was probably at the top of it. 🐴

I harvested all the tomatoes that I thought were big enough and might ripen off the vine with these cold temps coming. It’s going to be in the high 20s when we wake up tomorrow morning 🥶

Tomatoes ripen from the inside out so as long as there’s a little color peaking through, you can pick them. I did grab some that were still completely green and a good size to see if they’d already started ripening but not enough to be seen. We shall see!

I have all natural soap available for anyone interested ❤️🫧 Made with organic coconut oil and organic olive oil, colored with natural colors (French pink clay, activated charcoal and turmeric in these bars), and scented with essential oils so there’s no artificial frangrance or colors in these bars.

The pink bar is scented with Rose essential oil and the other is a warm Vanilla. These were made on Friday and ready to use, but will last a bit longer in the shower if they’re let to cure longer and harden up for another week or so. The cream color will also end up turning more of a white as they sit.

Bars are $6 each or 3 for $15. 😊

Located in German Valley, IL but can meet anywhere from Freeport-Belvidere and most places in between!

If they’re only going to give me two eggs a day, at least they’re pretty 🫣

The speckled egg is from a black copper marans and the pink, heavy bloom egg is from a lavender Orpington my daughter named Grape Pop 💜

The bees have been absolutely loving this sedum right now! They have loved it all summer but especially now when a lot of other nectar sources have disappeared. I think the ones visiting most these days are male bees because they haven’t been stinging Scotty, who continually picks them up 🐝

This sedum is from my Grandma’s old house in Shannon. I had a lot more of it in our garden in Kentucky, but the pots I had planted it in were filled with ants. I brought a little piece hoping it would make it, and it’s blooming so beautifully! I’m not sure if I’m going to let it take over this planter for next year or transplant it into our landscaping 🤔
