Best costume I ever saw came out of somebody's mom's closet.

That's the whole tip. Before you buy anything, raid what's already around you. Your closet, your sister's, your friend who keeps everything. Then the vintage and thrift shops, which is where the actually good stuff hides anyway.

Go look through a rack. It's more fun than the alternative 💙

Mafer's staff pick, and the best part is that it starts before the job.

She bought the silicone straws with her sister years ago, back when she didn't know this shop existed. The collection has grown since. Steel and glass ones are in the dishwasher right now, which is why they're not in the photo.

Two dish sponges, different shapes on purpose. One for dishes, one for the pet bowls. They do not mix.

The Los Altos cutlery set lives in her car for takeout days. The bamboo one lives in her purse. And the Spinster Sisters serum stick is down to its last bit, which she sent a photo of deliberately, while openly hoping to have another 💙 Spinster Sisters Co. - Consciously Crafted Beauty Minori

Look for the words home compostable. That's the tell.

This one comes up at the counter a lot. Compostable usually means a commercial facility. Home compostable means your own backyard. Two different claims, one word apart.

You know the pile. Saturday morning, a bowl of wrappers, and nobody wants to deal with it.

We're not going to tell you to skip trick or treating. But the grown-up half of Halloween can go better, and that part's easy.

Most wrappers are plastic fused to foil or paper, in one sheet no machine can pull apart. The exception is a wrapper that's foil all the way through. Those actually recycle.

The Dandelion bars are paper and foil, made in California. Those ones are for you, not the kids 💙

Another staff pick, this one's Makena's.

She has sensitive skin, so the soap, the moisturizer and the deodorant all had to earn their place. The Thistle Valley bar has Monterey Bay bladderwrack in it, which she clocked immediately, because she studies kelp.

That's also why the print is here. Stella made it, and Makena won't stop talking about it 💙

That's Meredith's actual sink. Nothing moved, nothing tidied, that's just how it looks.

The luffa's been in rotation about a month and it still looks like that.

One rule and it's the only one: wring it out and let it dry between uses. Leave it sitting wet and it'll go slimy on you, same as any sponge would 💙

It grew on a vine. Same family as cucumbers and squash.

What you're looking at is the dried fiber from inside the fruit, which is the whole plant doing the work. No plastic, no foam, nothing invented in a lab.

When it finally wears out it goes in the compost, which is not something you can say about the sponge under your sink 💙

You almost certainly already own your fall decor.

The jars from the recycling bin, filled with whatever's on the ground outside. Branches in a vase. A real pumpkin, which you can actually eat, and then compost. Candles you already have, moved to a different table.

We like this season as much as anybody. We just notice that the version in the stores is mostly plastic leaves that get boxed up in November and forgotten by the following October.

Yours doesn't have to look like a catalog 💙
