COLORBLENDS is a flowerbulb importer that provides the best varieties of top-quality bulbs at wholesale prices that are guaranteed to give you spectacular spring displays. is a family-owned business that formed in The Netherlands in 1912. Cornelis Schipper brought the company to the United States following World War II, where he could often be found delivering bulb orders in his coupe sedan. The company, now named COLORBLENDS now offers flowerbulbs via its catalog and website. IT'S ABOUT SPRING. Today COLORBLENDS specializes in creating beautiful pre-blended combinations of tulip bulbs that create an explosion of spring color it calls, “NATURE’S FIREWORKS®.” Thanks to a century of bulb experience in The Netherlands and the United States, COLORBLENDS takes the guesswork out of how to create a jaw-dropping spring flower display through its theory of “randomnaiety.” Whether grouped by size, bloom time, color, or shape, COLORBLENDS offers its customers bulb combinations designed to flower simultaneously in random, yet controlled patterns that will turn any garden into a showpiece. As flowerbulb experts, COLORBLENDS utilizes the art and science that goes into creating gorgeous spring bulb gardens.

Selecting the right planting site is key to growing healthy, long-lasting bulbs.

Two factors—sunlight and drainage—make all the difference when deciding where to plant.

1: Sunlight. Most bulbs need ample sunshine to bloom well next spring and to store up the energy required to flower in future springs. Some bulbs — including crocuses and scillas — can be planted beneath deciduous trees; these bulbs are able to satisfy most of their light needs before the trees leaf out.

2: Drainage. All bulbs need good drainage; never plant bulbs where water collects. The drainage of heavy clay soils can be improved by digging in organic matter such as compost. If your soil is less than perfectly drained and you still want to plant bulbs, try Snowflake or Camassia.

You can easily plant 100+ tulip bulbs in about 30 minutes. Here's how:

Step 1: Dig a trench about 5" deep (check your planting instructions for specifics for your bulbs). You can pile the soil on a tarp, large trash bag, large piece of cardboard, or sheet of plywood for easier cleanup.

Step 2: Add bulbs. Pour them into the trench and spread them out. How much time you spend on arranging your bulbs depends on your desired outcome. Not too picky? Just make sure they're not touching. Don't worry too much about facing them all upward; they will find their way. Want a more formal look? Take the time to space them out into even rows.

Step 3: Fill in the trench. Gently shovel the soil back into the trench, pack it lightly, and smooth the top for nice, even coverage.

Step 4: Finish the bed. Add mulch and water the bulbs in. If squirrels are a problem in your area, cover the bed with chicken wire, screen, or hardware fabric.

Want a garden bursting with spring color? It starts with planting bulbs this fall. Here are three ways to do it: poke, drill, and trench.

Method one: Poke. Use a trowel, a hori-hori, or a step-on planter to make a small hole, then drop in a bulb. It’s great for tucking bulbs around shrubs and established plants, or for small cottage-style clusters. But it can be slow for big plantings.

Method two: Drill. A bulb auger on your drill makes quick work of planting in lawns or across large areas. Team up: one person drills, the other drops in bulbs. Clear away rocks first, and know where your irrigation and lighting lines are before you start.

Method three: Trench. Dig a trench to the recommended depth, then set your bulbs in neat rows or loose drifts. Cover with soil, add a light layer of mulch, and water well. The result is a dense bed of spring blooms.

Whichever method you choose, your spring garden starts now. Shop bulbs on our website.

🦌 If you've been discouraged from planting tulips because of deer, voles, or chipmunks, consider these bulbs instead. Colorblends lists hundreds of different bulbs, and there's plenty of spring color to be had, even without planting tulips.

Daffodils, alliums, and many of our specialty bulbs such as blue squill, camassia, snake's head fritillaria, snowdrops, and more are all deer resistant. Use the filter on the Colorblends website and choose “Attributes” > “Resistant to Deer” to see all the deer resistant bulbs we have.

For a naturalized planting in your lawn, make sure you choose an area where the grass can be allowed to grow, unmown, until late spring or early summer.

Before planting, mow the grass, but set the blade lower than you might normally. Mowing will help you see bulbs sitting on top of the grass.

To achieve a natural look, toss the bulbs into the planting area and plant them where they lie. Some areas will be thickly planted, some sparsely. This is what you would expect to find in nature. (The challenge, with this approach, is finding and planting all of the bulbs.)

Should you water and fertilize bulbs?

If the soil is dry at planting time, water thoroughly after planting. Thereafter, water only if rainfall is scarce. Stop watering after the bulbs bloom. Supplemental watering after bloom—especially in the Deep South—may cause bulbs to rot.

No need to fertilize. The bulbs we ship already have next year’s flowers set inside them, so there’s no need to fertilize at planting time. To grow and flower well in future springs, bulbs need access to nutrients in the soil. Most soils contain these nutrients in sufficient abundance.

If you find that your bulbs (or other garden plants) are not growing well, we suggest that you have your soil tested to identify any nutrient deficiencies and that you correct those deficiencies with an organic fertilizer, which will release nutrients slowly.

You can generally do without fertilizer entirely if you mulch your bulbs with 2–3 inches of an organic material such as compost, shredded bark, aged wood chips, pine straw, or shredded leaves, and freshen it as needed.

Note: If you use mulch, you can reduce the planting depth for your bulbs. The denser the mulch, the greater the reduction, but as a rule of thumb, 2 inches of mulch is equivalent to 1 inch of soil.
