Wood paneling has a way of changing the feel of a space. Used on both the walls and ceiling, it adds warmth, texture, and architectural detail while creating a cozy, elevated atmosphere.

In a bedroom, natural wood can make the space feel inviting and comfortable without sacrificing a refined look. The right wood species, finish, and paneling style can complement the overall design while adding character that painted surfaces simply can't replicate. Even the size and width of the paneling can make a difference. Wider planks create a more open, modern feel, while narrower panels introduce added texture and detail. These design choices can completely transform the look and feel of a room.

Why choose custom architectural millwork?

Because project details don't always fit a standard product.

Custom millwork lets you make wood components to the specific dimensions, design, and architectural requirements of a space. It also gives architects, builders, designers, and homeowners greater flexibility when standard products don't provide the right fit or finish.

At Brainerd Hardwoods, our in-house capabilities let us create custom doors, mouldings, paneling, stair components, specialty woodwork, and more.

Every wood species has its own character, and Alder offers a warm, refined look with a relatively uniform grain and subtle texture.

Ranging from light tan to pale reddish-brown, Alder is known for its workability and ability to take stains and finishes well. The understated grain makes it a versatile choice for custom doors, moulding, paneling, and other architectural woodwork.

Brainerd Hardwoods offers Alder alongside a wide selection of hardwood and softwood species, helping architects, builders, designers, and homeowners find the right material for their projects.

As the seasons change, warm wood tones can add natural depth and character to an interior.

Natural wood works across a wide range of architectural styles, with different species, stains, finishes, paneling profiles, and millwork details creating very different looks within the same space.

For fall projects and interiors designed to feel warm and inviting, custom woodwork can be used throughout the space to create a cohesive, finished look.

Look how far we’ve come.

Brainerd Hardwoods has come a long way since its early days, when the company started in a garage with basic equipment and a focus on quality craftsmanship. Today, that same commitment has grown into a full-scale architectural millwork operation serving residential and commercial projects throughout the United States.

Over more than four decades, our equipment, capabilities, and scope of work have evolved, but the attention to detail behind every project remains the same.

And we’re not done growing. Follow along for more updates on what’s taking shape at our facility and what’s ahead for Brainerd Hardwoods.

Today, we remember Bruce Paine and honor the lasting impact he made on his family, Brainerd Hardwoods, and the Brainerd community.

In 1980, Bruce and Jim Vacinek founded Brainerd Hardwoods, beginning a 30-year chapter of hard work, collaboration, and lasting relationships. Bruce was known for his practical know-how, quick wit, sense of humor, and willingness to lend a hand. He brought those qualities into his work and into the many friendships he built along the way.

Bruce’s legacy extends well beyond the business he helped establish. He will be remembered for his generosity, his adventurous spirit, his love for his family, and the countless stories that will continue to bring laughter to those who knew him.

Today, as family and friends gather to celebrate his life, we remember Bruce for the person he was, the relationships he built, and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.

In loving memory of Bruce G. Paine

Hickory stands out for its strength and striking natural color variation. Light sapwood and darker heartwood can appear within the same board, creating a bold contrast that gives the finished wood a distinct look. Its durability makes Hickory a strong choice for flooring, paneling, and other custom woodwork where both performance and visual impact matter.

Hardwood trim can collect dust, fingerprints, and everyday buildup over time. Regular cleaning helps maintain the wood's appearance and finish.

Start with a soft, lint-free cloth for routine dusting. For a deeper clean, use a lightly dampened cloth and dry the surface afterward. Avoid abrasive products and cleaners containing ammonia, as they can damage or dull the finish over time.

A little routine care can help keep hardwood trim looking its best for years to come.
