Happy Halloween Eve! // Our Princess Trail project sits perched at the western edge of the Mapleton Hill Historic district, helping define the line between a classic Boulder neighborhood and the Settlers Park open space.

It remains a timeless discussion between the vernacular architectural language of the place, executed with contemporary form, materials, and detailing.

Living spaces cascade from the entry down to the gathering space, taking advantage of an expansive indoor / outdoor connection to the elevated view deck beyond.

Our collaborators over at Lucas Lucas Landscape Architecture received a well-deserved feature in LUXE Interiors + Design for their fine work on our Dry Creek project.

The slope of the site down to the vineyards below provided opportunity and inspiration to compose a series of outdoor terraces that fosters a sense of discovery with each shifting perspective of the various nodes of connection and reflection.

In concert, these distinct yet harmonious layers create such a richness in the experience of the landscape. This concept was important to our clients and homeowners early on - we can’t help but think L+L’s ex*****on delivered in a spectacular way.

A photographic study of the seaside bar, billiards room, and entertainment patio at our Eldorado residence.
A composition of wood, stone, and board formed concrete; accentuated by intricate leather, wire, and glass details.
Thin-woven Matesi basket lights occupy the two-story space above, bringing forms that are reminiscent of local seaside technologies.
A cantilevered steel and glass door opens the atrium space with the waterfall; the counterweight function celebrated at the interior of the bar behind glass.
The perfect place to rack ‘em up and enjoy the seaside breeze!

Nestled into a sun-warmed hillside at the base of the Flatirons, our Camp Chautauqua project seeks to feel like part of the landscape rather than superimposed onto it.

The home steps down the slope in a series of linked volumes, each one angled to frame a different vignette of the view — foothills grasses in the foreground, the iconic rock formations rising just beyond. Deep roof overhangs and a warm palette of wood, stone, and glass let the architecture recede into its site.

Native grasses, boulder outcroppings, and drought-tolerant plantings blur the line between built and natural, just a home that settles quietly into the terrain it was given.

Listening to Landscape.

Approaching Landscape as a forethought to design is a consistent source of Surround’s inspiration, and remains ever-present throughout our entire design process. Listening to learn about the dynamic phases of the land is vital to naturalistic placemaking. We tend to think of Architecture as a focal lens filter, articulating the Landscape as it runs through. The fascination is endless to the degrees Landscape may be discovered, revealed, and sculpted by itself or by interventions.

Surround’s Lacuna project in Ontario is defined by an articulated version of the naturally occurring environment, and the edges gradually dissipate outwards to pastoral apple orchards and meadow vistas. Creek beds running under bridged walkways elevate a hallway circulation to be an immersive experience. Large boulders and tall grasses soften edges to bring everyday living closer to nature.

Throughout a project’s ebb and flow we form special collaborative bonds with Landscape Architects and Builders to achieve spectacular results greater than the sum of their parts. Special thanks to TheLandmarkGroup and Absolute Craftsmen Ltd …

Throwback to our Cairn project — a family home tucked into the base of the foothills.
We love designing in environments where our homes get to interact with the natural landscapes, where architecture doesn’t compete with the land, but settles into it.
Behind the façade, the plan opens into a courtyard designed for entertainment and pool activities, giving the family a private outdoor room that’s sheltered from the wind and oriented to the best of the hillside views.

At Surround we approach the design of our projects as the synthesis of site, architecture, interior design, and furnishings.
All details need to be considered in concert with one another; from the expansive operable fenestration to the Fleuri cut fireplace slabs, from the Beni Ourain rug to the mechanical grilles.
The result brings spaces like our Dakota Ridge primary suite to life, captured during a magical mid-summer day.

Thrilled to share a few views into the kitchen and living spaces of our Eldorado project — where clean lines and sculptural simplicity are thoughtfully described by our Arclinea cabinet package.

The blackened teel support fins at the island provide visual density, and the floating glass and steel cabinets expand the room with the deeply smoked mirror finish.

Overhead, structural cast concrete ceilings give way to richly paneled wood coffers — a dramatic shift in texture, punctuated by Henge pendants that feel almost acrobatic in their minimalist form.

The connection to the atrium patio is seamless, leveraging the coast-to-coast sliders provided by Fleetwood Windows and Doors.
