📫 Hit by a vehicle. Broken into. Replaced.

The old cluster mailbox unit (CBU) had been backed into by a vehicle, bent, and previously broken into. The modern box is reinforced for security, provides 2 additional parcel lockers, and matches the package CBU already in place.

One of my favorite details? Each mail door was laser engraved with its corresponding home’s address numbers, creating a clean and organized finish.

CBU mailbox installation tip: How to drill perfectly aligned concrete anchor holes.

If you’ve ever installed a cluster box unit (CBU), you know the paper anchor bolt template isn’t ideal. It slides around, and the masonry drill bit can drift to throw off your hole locations.

I built a metal drill jig to solve both problems. Instead of relying on a paper template, this rigid jig holds the hole locations and guides the drill bit perpendicular to the concrete.

The result? Straight, accurately positioned anchor bolts that make mounting a cluster mailbox pedestal much easier.

📫 Leaning mailbox post? Installation tip

Mailbox posts are often installed on uneven ground, alongside roadways, in ditches, or on sloping surfaces. Burial depth and the shape of the hole before pouring concrete are important to ensure your mailbox stays straight for years to come.

Before purchasing a mailbox post, verify that it’s long enough to accommodate your required burial depth while still meeting USPS mailbox height specifications.

A quality mailbox deserves a properly installed post. Getting the foundation right the first time prevents rework and gives you more time to focus on all your other home improvement projects (that have been assigned to you 😆).

✅ Burial Depth: A common installation depth is 16-24 inches, depending on soil conditions and terrain.

✅ Freeze Thaw Conditions: In areas that experience ground freezing and thawing, aim for at least 24 inches

Million dollar homes, lake views…and a mailbox setup that’s beginning to grow 📬

This neighborhood mailbox post has been added onto and modified to accommodate larger mailboxes over the years. While it still serves its purpose, there’s opportunity for something better.

A Cluster Box Unit (CBU) would offer several advantages:

✅ Individual locking mail compartments
✅ Secure outgoing mail
✅ Locking parcel lockers for package deliveries
✅ A modern design that complements the neighborhood

A CBU mailbox installation was proposed in the past, but neighbors couldn’t reach an agreement.

This is a common challenge in neighborhoods without a homeowners association (HOA). Shared mailbox upgrades require buy-in and getting everyone on the same page isn’t always easy.

The current setup isn’t necessarily bad or falling apart. It’s functional. But when you’re surrounded by beautiful homes and lake views, why not have a mailbox setup that complements the neighborhood?

CBU mailbox maintenance ✅📬

I might not sound excited but the tenants will be, with 4 more parcel lockers!

This cluster mailbox needed quite a bit of attention. We installed 4 missing parcel locker doors, completed 5 rekeys, repaired mail doors that weren’t closing properly, and replaced several missing components.

Repair work coordinated with USPS 🤝. Because access to the main cabinet of the mailbox is controlled by the Postal Service, a USPS associate met me on site and unlocked the unit so I could complete the necessary repairs.

The previous mailbox was completely destroyed, we installed a brand new replacement. Instead of making each resident deal with new keys, we transferred all of the existing locks from the damaged mailbox into the new one.

Same locks. Same keys. Brand new mailbox.

Small detail but it makes the replacement process much easier for everyone who uses the mailbox, no new keys to distribute and no need to update key records.

The new installation turned out great and is ready to get back to work.
