October is Gate Safety Awareness Month, and we never want it to pass without sharing Alex’s story.
Seven-year-old Alex Quanbeck was playing with friends during school recess when he tried to close a gate to keep their ball from rolling away.
The gate detached from its supporting hardware and fell on him, tragically taking his life. His story is a heartbreaking reminder of why proper gate design, installation, and maintenance matter.
His parents turned their grief into action through The Hummingbird Alliance, advocating for safer gates and working to prevent other families from experiencing the same loss.
Thankfully, awareness is growing. This April, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, chaired by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, advanced the bipartisan Alex Gate Safety Act—a meaningful step toward stronger gate safety protections nationwide.
Here in Bastrop County, we continue to encounter gate systems with serious safety concerns. A gate that opens and closes can still have dangerous defects.
At Butler Contracting, safety is a responsibility we take personally. We invest in professional training and certification because protecting your children, grandchildren, visitors, and neighbors deserves that commitment.
Butler Contracting is home to Bastrop County’s only American Fence Association Certified Gate Automation Technician and Certified Gate Automation Designer.
From structural supports and hardware to automatic gate safety devices, the details matter. Proper installation, inspections, and ongoing maintenance all play a role in reducing risks.
If you’re planning a new gate or have concerns about an existing system, let’s talk.
