Sometimes the most rewarding part of growing a garden is what you bring back inside.

A little lavender for a fragrant sachet. Rosemary for a relaxing bath. Rose petals for a simple botanical project.

These aren't elaborate preparations. They're small ways to enjoy the plants you've cared for—and another reason to spend time in the garden.

In my latest article, The Garden Apothecary: Growing a Garden That Gives Back, I'm sharing how to create a beautiful garden filled with plants that have a place in everyday life.

A garden becomes more memorable when we experience it with more than our eyes.

Consider what happens as you move through the space.

🌿 Fragrant lavender or rosemary planted near a pathway invites you to pause.

🌿 Soft foliage and contrasting textures make a planting feel layered and inviting.

🌿 Ornamental grasses introduce gentle movement, even on a quiet afternoon.

These are simple design choices, but together they can transform an ordinary garden into a place that feels restorative.

Let’s rethink fall mums—with a little movement and a touch of silver.

Mums are lovely on their own, but pairing dusty rose blooms with bronze carex and silver dusty miller gives this fall favorite a fresh look. The grass adds airy height, the mums bring soft color, and the silver foliage ties it all together. A warm terracotta pot finishes the mix beautifully.

To create the arrangement, place the carex toward the back, then tuck the mums and dusty miller around it. Start with a pot that has drainage holes and leave room for potting mix around each root ball.

Would you try this softer take on a fall planter? Save it for your next nursery trip!

An apothecary garden doesn't need to look like a collection of herbs.

In fact, some of the most beautiful plants we grow for their fragrance and everyday uses fit naturally into an ornamental garden.

The trick is to design with layers.

🌿 Anchor: Roses and rosemary create lasting structure.

🌸 Middle: Lavender, chamomile, and echinacea bring seasonal flowers, fragrance, and texture.

🌱 Fill: Low-growing thyme softens the edges and connects the planting.

It's the same approach I use when designing any beautiful garden. We're simply choosing plants that offer something extra.

Some of the most meaningful gardens aren't designed to impress. They're designed to help us slow down.

A quiet bench beneath a tree. A pathway that invites us to wander. The gentle movement of grasses in the breeze.

These small moments can make a garden feel like a retreat from the business of everyday life.

When planning a garden, we often spend so much time thinking about the plants that we overlook something equally important—**the materials beneath our feet.**

Limestone can feel soft and timeless. Gravel brings a relaxed, informal character. Brick adds warmth, while concrete and steel can create a more modern feel.

But the real magic happens in how those materials work together.

One of my favorite design principles is to **choose a few complementary materials and repeat them throughout the garden.** That repetition creates a sense of connection, even as you move between different outdoor spaces.

And don't forget the transitions—where a path meets a patio or paving gives way to planting. Those little details can make a big difference in how the whole garden feels.

**What materials do you love in a garden—natural stone, brick, gravel, or something more modern?** 🌿

Thinking about growing blueberries? 🫐🌿

Fall is a great time to plant blueberries in warmer climates! And they're not just for the vegetable garden. Blueberry bushes have pretty spring flowers, delicious summer berries, and beautiful fall color.

When to plant:

Zones 4–5: Spring (April–May)
Zone 6: Early fall or spring
Zones 7–8: Fall (October–November) or late winter
Zones 9–10: Fall through winter, with varieties suited to your climate

These are general windows, so check local recommendations before planting.

The secret to growing blueberries? Full sun, good drainage, and acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5).

For my Texas gardeners, blueberries can be tricky in our alkaline soils. Large containers with an acidic planting mix are often a better option!

What if your garden could offer more than something beautiful to look at?

Imagine stepping outside to gather a little rosemary, lavender, or a few fragrant rose petals—plants that bring beauty to the garden and small pleasures into everyday life.

That's the idea behind a Garden Apothecary. Not a complicated herbal garden, but a thoughtfully designed space filled with plants you'll love to grow and use.

Chickens... but make it part of the garden. 🐓🌿

I love the idea of a chicken coop that doesn’t have to be tucked away and hidden. Give it a pretty little structure, surround it with herbs, flowers and raised beds, and suddenly it becomes part of the garden.

Practical, productive and still beautiful.

I might be a little biased on this one, but I’d happily make room for it in the backyard.

Would you?
