Scaring people is good marketing! 🎃 Halloween gives permission to get weird, play with surroundings, and do something unexpected. People can skip a traditional ad, but stumbling across Michael Meyers frozen in a block of ice on a NYC street? That’s a story you’re telling someone later. Here’s a few Halloween activations we’re still thinking about. 🧡

Is it a coincidence that our role models both said the same things when asked about advice? 🎯 Or are they onto something?

What if playgrounds were designed not only for kids to play, but for kids and their caregivers to play together?

At Rec Department, we think a lot about how the spaces we build shape the way people experience the world. The environments we grow up in, and the relationships we build within them, can have a lasting impact on our emotional health and well-being.

One of our dream projects is to design and fabricate a playground that encourages connection between children and their caregivers, creating opportunities for shared discovery, imagination, and play.

And just as importantly, there should never be any shame in taking a break. If you’re a parent or caregiver who needs a moment on the bench, take it. You deserve space to breathe, too.

David Hockney once said, “People tend to forget that play is serious.” We couldn’t agree more.

That idea is explored in The Art of Play by Emmy Watts, published by Hoxton Mini Press. The book travels the globe to showcase more than 80 spaces designed to inspire play, creativity, and discovery for children and adults alike.

Here’s to creating more spaces that bring us together, and remembering that play is for everyone.
