What if the classroom mirrored the real workplace?

That’s the idea behind UAA’s John E. Havelock Trial Simulation Courtroom.

Designed to look and function like a real State of Alaska courtroom, this space gives Justice Center students the opportunity to do more than study the legal system — they can step into it. Students can practice trial procedures, examine witnesses, present evidence, and develop the communication and critical-thinking skills they’ll carry into their careers.

But what makes this project especially meaningful is how far beyond the room itself the learning can reach.

Integrated technology supports synchronous, interactive distance learning, creating opportunities for students at UAA community campuses and in rural communities across Alaska to participate in courtroom experiences without being in Anchorage. The space can also support youth exploring future careers and legal professionals sharpening their skills through mock trials and training.

It’s experiential learning, technology-enabled access, workforce development, and a connection between higher education and the communities it serves, all within 2,100 square feet.

Sometimes the most impactful learning environments aren’t the biggest — they’re the ones that make what comes next feel real.

The teams are full. The sponsors are all in. 🏓

The Explore Design Pickleball Classic is coming up on October 23, and we're grateful for the incredible businesses helping make this year's event possible!

A big thank you to our court, equipment, and fuel sponsors for stepping up and supporting a day of friendly competition, community connection, and giving back to Beacon Hill. Your support helps bring the event together and makes an impact beyond the court.

🎶 Every great Dynamic Duo deserves a great entrance!

And who better to set the soundtrack than DJ Spencer Lee? 🎧

A familiar name in Alaska's music scene for over 20 years, Spencer has shared lineups with artists like Macklemore, Diplo, Portugal. The Man, and Salt-N-Pepa. He's also known for bringing the community together through events like Jams for Fams and Spenard Prom.

We're excited to have him bringing the music and energy to this year's Explore Design Pickleball Classic on October 23! 🏓

Now we want to hear from you!

What's your Dynamic Duo's walk-up song? 👀🎵

Drop your song choice in the comments!

🏆 The OTHER Championship!

Who says you have to win the tournament to take home a championship belt? 👀

At last year's Explore Design Pickleball Classic, Nathan Chartier and Riley Harris of RSA Engineering brought the energy, the costumes, and plenty of personality to earn the 2025 Most Spirited Award! 🎉

From the wrestling-inspired outfits to the championship-worthy poses, these two understood the assignment. And judging by the photos, they had a pretty good time doing it!

New year, new duos, and another chance to claim the belt. Think your Dynamic Duo has what it takes? 🏓

We'll find out October 23!

🏆 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀!

Matt and Mallory Van Goethem know a thing or two about a comeback!

After finishing as runners-up in the first Explore Design Pickleball Classic, they returned last year with their eyes on the prize. A championship match against Dave and Peg Bernert of DBA later, the trophy was officially theirs!

Both Project Managers at Explore Design, Matt and Mallory have also played a big part in bringing this tournament to life, with Mallory continuing to help lead the charge each year.

Now, there's just one question...

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻. 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆? 🏆

Think your duo has what it takes to dethrone the champs? We'll see you on the court!

10/12/2026

One Tournament. Countless Duos. One Great Cause. 🏓

It's more than just pickleball. It's about showing up for our community!

Meet Beacon Hill, the organization at the heart of why we play. 💙 We're proud to support their work and help them continue making a difference in the lives of those they serve.

See you on the courts October 23rd 😎
