We couldn't bring The Shop at Hazel Tree to life without Lori Julien!

Before joining our team, Lori owned Marigold Sol on Kenmore Boulevard, where she combined her love of vintage finds, locally made goods and sustainable design with years of experience in retail and creative entrepreneurship.

Lori ( ) has been a great friend and collaborator for years, and we've often talked about working together to bring a retail experience back to Hazel Tree. When Lori joined our team three years ago, those conversations started turning into plans.

Now, as we prepare to open The Shop at Hazel Tree with The Art of Home: Winter Edition, Lori's experience as a shop owner, creative eye and passion for supporting local artists and makers have been invaluable in bringing this vision to life.

We're grateful to have her on our team and can't wait to share what we've been working on!

Join us for the opening weekend:
Friday, December 4 | 4-8 p.m.
Saturday, December 5 | 11 a.m.-4 p.m.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Artist Open House at Hazel Tree last night! We loved connecting with so many talented local artists and hearing their ideas.

If you're interested in having your work sold at The Shop at Hazel Tree, email us at [email protected]. We're primarily looking for functional pieces that are beautiful and crafted for everyday use. And spread the word to any local artists you know!

We're working hard on The Shop at Hazel Tree's opening in December and can't wait to invite you back inside.

To us, sustainability and creativity go hand in hand, and we’re looking for makers, artisans and creatives who feel the same.

At Hazel Tree, upcycling, recycling and reimagining are central to our vision. After all, it’s what we bring to the home decor scene!

As we transform our showroom into The Shop at Hazel Tree, we’re looking to collaborate with local artists who share our passion for sustainability, creativity and giving forgotten objects new life.

A thrifted end table might become that canvas you were searching for. An old mirror might find a completely new personality (or become a new piece of functional art). A once overlooked piece of vintage furniture might become the statement piece that makes an entire room.

Are you an artist who loves working with reclaimed materials or transforming old objects into something new?

We’d love to connect! Send us a message and show us what you create. Better yet, stop by our Artist Open House this evening (10/28) from 4-6:30pm at Hazel Tree Design Studio | 143 W. Market St. in Akron.

A look back at one of our favorite office buildouts.

When Akron software company ExpandShare (now Restaurant 365) was preparing to move into a larger office, we had the opportunity to help shape their new space from the ground up. They wanted something colorful, collaborative and full of personality. They also shared our love of incorporating locally made pieces wherever possible.

Because their work centers around communication and connection, greens, blues and purples became the foundation of the palette. We filled the space with plenty of color, even down to the different fabrics we chose for the cubicles.

We also worked with local artists and makers to create custom furniture, lighting, glasswork and pieces made from reclaimed materials, giving the office details you wouldn’t find anywhere else.

One of our favorites came from a tradition the team already had: At their old office, employees would gather during lunch to work on a puzzle together. So we designed a spot for that, too! This included a custom removable tabletop “Lazy Susan” large enough to hold their puzzle and move it out of the way when needed.

Good design isn’t just about how a space looks. It’s about understanding how people actually use it, and making room for the little things that make a workplace feel like theirs. 🧩

Swipe to see how this once-empty space was transformed.

CALLING LOCAL ARTISTS + MAKERS 📣

This winter, we’re relaunching our home décor shop, and our goal is to fill it with work from talented makers throughout Northeast Ohio.

We’re looking for functional art made for the home. Think ceramics, vases and mirrors to small furnishings, reclaimed pieces and one-of-a-kind finds.

Selected work will be styled into seasonal showroom vignettes by the Hazel Tree design team and available for customers to purchase. Since our launch is The Art of Home: Winter Edition, we are also excited to sell locally made ornaments this December, just in time for the holidays!

Interested in being part of The Shop at Hazel Tree Opening | The Art of Home: Winter Edition's collection? Send an email to [email protected] for info!

𝑨 𝒏𝒆𝒘 𝒃𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒂 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒐𝒕𝒔.

When Hazel Tree first opened, we imagined our showroom as more than a space to see our design work.

We began as a place where you could discover locally made, repurposed and thoughtfully curated functional art for the home. Local artists, makers and designers could create and share beautiful pieces for the spaces we live in.

This December, we’re returning to our roots and bringing that vision back to life. We’re evolving the Hazel Tree showroom back into a home décor shop filled with locally made furniture, functional art, and one-of-a-kind pieces with a story behind them.

Announcing:

While our showroom at 143 W. Market St. will change, our picture framing services, interior and public space design, Norwalk Furniture, and work with local artists for custom pieces won't go anywhere.

The Shop at Hazel Tree will be filled with the kinds of pieces we love incorporating into our residential clients' homes every day. Think beautiful ceramic pieces, small tables, mirrors, clocks, pillows, key hooks, tablecloths, shelves, and more, all created by local artisans.

Back to where we started… and growing upward from here.

Our opening weekend begins Friday, December 4. Save the date, and stay tuned for more updates!

Picture framing is truly a lost art.

While many people know us for interior or public space design, custom framing has been an integral part of Hazel Tree since the beginning. As independent frame shops become harder to find, we’re proud to continue the craft right here in West Hill.

Our co-owner and master framer Jon Haidet has almost 40 years of experience framing everything from original artwork to photographs, prints, treasured heirlooms and even offbeat objects like basketballs!

Homeowners, artists, corporations, museums and other local interior designers have trusted our team with pieces that deserve to be displayed beautifully and protected for decades to come.

And there’s a lot more to it than picking a frame.

With walls of molding samples and thousands of mat options, we consider the artwork, proportions, materials, preservation, where the piece will live and, of course, your personal style and budget.

Sometimes that means creating a shadow box for something that was never intended to hang on a wall. 🏀 Often, it means finding a creative solution that saves a customer money.

The combination of craftsmanship and problem-solving is why Jon has built a loyal following over the past four decades, and why we’re pretty proud of our five-star framing reviews!

Have a piece sitting at home waiting for the right frame? Bring it in. We’d love to help you finally get it on the wall.

And speaking of getting it on the wall: We do that, too! Call or email us if you’d like hourly art installation help. The right placement, height and arrangement make all the difference.

What does a textile sound like? 🎶

One of the things we love about working in commercial interior design is seeing just how far creativity can stretch.

At NeoConn's annual commercial design gathering in Chicago, Momentum Textiles & Wallcoverings shared a collaboration that turned three textile patterns by architect and designer Michael Ford into original musical compositions.

The patterns themselves helped shape the music, translating elements like color, geometry and rhythm from something you can see into something you can hear.

Momentum is also a company we know well at Hazel Tree. We specify many of their textiles and wallcoverings in our own commercial projects right here in Akron and throughout Northeast Ohio.

We love getting a glimpse at the experimentation happening across the design world… and then bringing that same curiosity back home to the spaces we create here!

Good design can do a whole lot more than make a room look nice. Sometimes, apparently, it can make music, too.
