Before a single dhak is played, Pujo begins with water.

At dawn on Mahalaya, thousands step into the Ganga with folded hands. They offer water in tarpan to those who came before us, to say we remember. Pitri Paksha ends today, and Devi Paksha begins.

The first offering of Pujo is the simplest one: water, pure enough to offer.
