Mungret Community College_
A new 11,300m² post-primary school for 1,000 pupils, delivered for Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board on a 10-acre greenfield site on the edge of Limerick City.
Healy Partners Architects acted as Architect, Design Team Lead, Employer's Representative and Assigned Certifier, taking the project from former farmland, through full site infrastructure (new access road, cycleways and services), to a finished campus that opened in 2024.
At the heart of the building is a large central atrium running through all three levels: a social and circulation hub that connects learning, gathering and the outdoors. Around it sit 37 classrooms, a full suite of specialist spaces (science, art, home economics, engineering, woodwork, media and ICT), a two-classroom SEN suite placed right alongside the main teaching areas, and a PE hall linking straight out to a full-size grass pitch and six hard courts.
The façades respond to orientation, daylight and long views toward the Shannon estuary, with a restrained palette of exposed concrete and warm natural finishes giving the school a civic presence in a fast-growing community.
Thanks to LCETB, the Department of Education, the contractor Coolsivna Construction Ltd and the full design team for a brilliant collaboration.
