Fewer developers hand code comments to AI as a separate task: 34% to 26%. Liam Bollmann-Dodd reads this as AI writing the comments while it generates the code.
The figure comes from our webinar recording, where Liam compares two waves of SlashData's global developer survey.
Base: the share among developers who use AI tools to help them write code, from SlashData's global developer survey of more than 10,000 developers per wave, Q1 vs Q3 2026.
Liam finds it hard to believe developers stopped wanting code comments, given how much they complain about code without them.
His explanation: models follow best practice as they write code, and that includes comments and annotations. In his words, "this task has been swallowed up by the wider engagement with AI for other code generation and other code behavior tasks."
For teams that measure AI developer tool use task by task: a falling share can mean the work has moved inside another task. Check where it went before you read the drop.
