Sometimes, the best details start with a practical problem.

When cabinetry reaches higher, a ladder gives you the freedom to make use of the full height of a room without compromising on access. But somewhere along the way, it becomes much more than that. It becomes part of the furniture, adding character, movement and another material detail to the space.

We’ve incorporated ladders into a number of Gopherwood projects, from libraries and full-height shelving to those spaces where making every inch work really matters.

And when we do, we turn to The Library Ladder Company. Their commitment to quality, from the timbers they work with to the fitments and finishes, mirrors the standard we strive for in every Gopherwood transformation.

That matters to us. The timber, the rail, the hardware, the proportions. Each has to sit comfortably within the wider design.

Practical, yes. But also one of those details that can completely change the personality of a room.

A home office needs to do more than give you somewhere to sit and open the laptop. It needs to work around the person using it, with the right storage, proportions and layout to make the space feel considered rather than simply fitted out.

That thinking starts long before we reach the workshop.

Jonny brings structure to the way every Gopherwood project develops. Each design is mocked up in 3D CAD, allowing us to work through the space, refine the details and show our clients how everything will come together before we begin making.

It’s where ideas become more tangible, where problems can be solved on screen, and where the proportions of every element can be considered as part of the room as a whole.

Bedrooms are where the day slows down.

Where the light softens, the door closes, and the noise of everything else can wait until morning.

For each of these spaces, the transformation was about creating a bedroom with its own identity, while still feeling completely at home within the property. Working with the character already there, we brought together colour, joinery, lighting, texture and carefully considered details to shape three very different rooms.

It’s often the quieter details that make the difference. The way the joinery sits within the architecture. The proportions of each panel. The warmth of timber against chosen accent colours. The way winter light moves through the room during the day, before softer lighting takes over in the evening.

Every decision plays its part in turning a room into somewhere that feels settled, considered and made for the people who live there.

At the end of a long week, or before another one begins, these are spaces to retreat to.

Not every project needs to be a full renovation to show what good craftsmanship can do. Sometimes it’s the smaller spaces — a run of shelving, a piece of architectural furniture, a corner of joinery that changes how a room feels.

These are the details we love: the ones that look simple, but take time, skill and a team who care about getting it right. The grain match across a panel. The way a shelf sits perfectly level. The solid feel of something that’s been built to last.

Living spaces carry the personality of a home — and for us, that’s where the work gets interesting.

Every lounge we build is shaped by the people who use it. Families who gather around a fire. Quiet Sunday mornings with a book. Evenings where the room becomes the centre of the house.

Our job is to design the structure that supports all of that: shelving that fits the rhythm of the room, media walls that feel architectural rather than dominant, and materials chosen for longevity, not trends.

It’s also where the team’s personality comes through — the small decisions, the problem‑solving, the craftsmanship you only notice when you live with it.

A slightly different commission for us.

A bespoke curved mirror surround, formed in-house and finished to create a brushed brass appearance, with integrated warm LED lighting around the inner edge.

Designed specifically to sit within this dressing room and tie into the existing brass detailing throughout the space.

A lot of experimenting went into getting this finish right — but seeing it installed made it worthwhile.

Sometimes the smallest piece in a room takes the most problem solving.
