Golden autumn tones are shimmering through the front border outside our Surrey showroom, caught beautifully in the light after the rain.

And beyond the colour, it’s a great example of different forms working together. The strong punctuation of topiary, the height and character of multi-stems, and the softness and movement of ornamental grasses all bringing their own layer to the scheme.

A little planting gold at the end of the rainbow.

Rhus typhina ‘Tiger Eyes’ bringing a bright autumn glow.

‘Tiger Eyes’ takes everything we love about sumac, but in a slightly more compact form. Finely cut foliage shifts from fresh greens and golds into fiery autumn tones as the season turns.

Then, as the leaves fall, clusters of deep red fruit remain, held above the bare framework like candle flames.

× Chitalpa tashkentensis ‘Summer Bells’

An interesting hybrid tree, with a loose, open canopy and beautifully frilly, trumpet-shaped pink flowers appearing in summer, usually around June or July.

With a relatively modest ultimate height of 4–8m, it’s a great choice where you want the presence of a flowering tree without the weight of a much larger canopy.

Gymnocladus dioica, with its large, divided leaves, brings a wonderfully coarse, fern-like quality through spring, summer and autumn. Its bold branching habit and characterful ridged bark give it presence through the winter.

Heptacodium miconioides is a tree that’s growing in popularity.

Valued for its multi-stem character, seasonal interest and remarkable adaptability, Heptacodium miconioides has become a go-to choice for designers looking to create structure without heaviness. Its resilience to increasingly hot, dry summers adds to its appeal.

These lovely specimens come in manageable 50L pots, making them surprisingly easy to position and, if needed, fit through a front door. Despite their practical size, they’re already standing at over 2 metres tall, offering immediate form and presence that will only improve with age.

Climbers are one of the most versatile, yet often overlooked, layers in a planting scheme.

Whether softening walls, framing doorways, weaving through structures or adding depth to a border, they bring height, texture and seasonal interest without taking up valuable ground space. Used thoughtfully, they can transform a flat backdrop into something far more immersive, helping to connect architecture and planting in a natural way.

Featured here is Trachelospermum jasminoides (Star Jasmine), a much-loved evergreen climber prized for its glossy foliage, twining habit and beautifully scented white flowers in summer. Providing year-round structure and a lush green presence, it’s equally at home covering fences and walls or bringing softness to pergolas and garden rooms.
