Interior Design Victoria BC. Guiding homeowners in their renovation + new build, start with clarity.

I’ll admit it, I get a little nervous every time I suggest painting the ceiling.

Then the last coat goes on and the room goes quiet. Walls, trim, crown, built-ins, all the same blue. Nothing competes, so everything else gets to speak: the cognac leather, the brass, a terracotta pot on the shelf.

This one is a home office and library. Mostly it’s a place to stay a while.

Hearth of the Home, in the fall issue of Spruce.

This Oak Bay main floor came to us in its 1980s original. We reworked it around light, flow and one anchoring move: a three-sided gas fireplace on a monolithic floating hearth, with the cedar beam carrying the line overhead.

Thank you to Spruce Magazine Victoria for the feature, and to Dasha Armstrong for the photograph.

The morning routine changes when the space is right.

Not because the closet is beautiful, though it is. Because everything has a place, the light is good, and there’s actually room to think. A window seat at the end. Brass hooks that hold the things you reach for first. Built-ins that were drawn around this family’s wardrobe, not a generic template.

Getting dressed stops feeling like a task and starts feeling like the beginning of something good.

That’s a small thing. And it isn’t small at all.

She was not part of the brief. But she did approve the dog wash.

This mudroom was designed around the reality of how this family actually lives. Wet coats, muddy paws, gear that needs a home the moment you walk in the door. The built-in dog wash with brass fittings wasn’t a luxury add-on. It was the obvious solution.

That’s what good design does. It looks at your actual life and builds around it, not around a showroom version of it.

This pup, apparently, agrees 🐾

A place for everything. And everything you have, you love.

That’s the standard I design to in a closet like this.

Storage solutions only work when the editing has happened first. The built-ins, the lighting, the window seat at the end of the hall, none of it matters if you’re just housing things you’ve outgrown. The design is the easy part. The intention behind it is the work.

When a client gets here, to a space this calm, it’s because they made decisions. About what stays. About what earns a place on the shelf. The closet just holds what’s left.

That’s what good design does. It creates the conditions for a life that fits.

Grey skies over Victoria this morning. The kind of day that asks for a room like this.

A full colour drench in deep moody blue, walls and ceiling in one continuous tone. The ceiling detail becomes texture and shadow rather than decoration. It reads as architecture.

Against it, warm oak, cognac leather, and the low glow of the pendants. Rain outside, calm in.

Fall is a good time to start thinking about the rooms you’ll spend winter in.

There’s a version of this that took a long time to get to.

Not the room. The being okay sitting in it.

The work I do has always been about creating spaces that feel like “you”, the real version, not the aspirational one, not the one performing a life. Just the one who finally stopped apologizing for what they love.

This laundry room is one of my favourites. Soft blue, warm wood, white walls, a window that does all the talking. Nothing extra. Nothing that doesn’t belong.

That’s the goal, in design and in life.

Maverick wasn’t just a name. It was a philosophy.

In this month’s Vancouver Sun, we talked rules - which ones hold, which ones bend, and why “trend-led” was never the goal. Planning before shopping. Lighting as a system, not an afterthought. Rooms that don’t need a hero moment to feel right.

They show up, they steal the show, they’re gone in a week.

Every year we forget how good they are. Every year they remind us.
