Hydro prices drop on November 1. A typical bill still goes up. Here’s the line on your bill most people skip ↓

What changes, with the math:

Electricity prices fall about 7% on November 1. One reason: Ontario expects a $205 million surplus by October 31. Customers paid more than power cost, so it goes back as lower prices.

The catch: find the line «Ontario Electricity Rebate» on your bill. It’s a discount from the province, and on November 1 it shrinks from 23.5% to 15.7%.

Example: a home using 700 kWh a month
−$6 cheaper electricity
+$13 smaller discount
= about $7 more a month, around $80 a year before HST
Your number depends on your usage and your utility.

3 free fixes for winter:
1. On time-of-use? Run laundry, dishwasher and EV charging after 7 p.m. or on weekends: 9.1¢ instead of 18.9¢
2. Check your kWh, not just the rate. Winter bills rise because you use more. Compare plans at oeb.ca/choice
3. Lower-income household? Check if you qualify for OESP: $35–$75 off a month

The fix that lasts is a home that needs less power. Ontario and Canada offer rebates for heat pumps and insulation, but the rules matter: most insulation rebates need an energy assessment before work starts, and the assessment route pays only if you complete at least two upgrades. Full guide in our next post.

You order the kitchen once. You live with the mistakes for years.

I’ve put together six storage ideas worth planning before you order your cabinets. These are the details that make a difference when you’re cooking, putting groceries away or trying to clear the counter. Swipe through →

1. Take the upper cabinets to the ceiling.
The gap above them collects dust and cooking grease and is awkward to clean. Full-height cabinets give you extra storage for holiday serving dishes and things you only use a few times a year.

2. Hide the bins under the sink.
A pull-out keeps bins out of sight and off the floor. Leave room around the plumbing and plan for what your household separates: garbage, recycling and food scraps.

3. Give small appliances a cabinet of their own.
The coffee maker, mixer, blender and toaster can take over the counter. A tall cabinet gives them a place to live and frees up space for cooking. Plan shelf heights, outlets and lighting together so everything is easy to reach and use.

4. Turn the corner into a pantry.
Deep corner cabinets can leave things buried at the back. A corner pantry with accessible shelves can make better use of that space for groceries, bulk purchases and larger dishes.

5. Add pull-out baskets for vegetables.
Bags of produce don’t need to live on the floor. Ventilated baskets let you see what you have without digging through bags. Choose a cool location, keep potatoes out of the light and store them separately from onions.

6. Use a narrow pull-out for bottles and spices.
Oils, vinegar and spices are easier to find when they’re lined up in a pull-out beside your prep area. Keep them close enough to reach while cooking, but away from stove and oven heat.

These details are much easier to work out on a drawing than after the cabinets arrive. Save this post for when you’re planning your kitchen.

Which of these do you already have—and would you choose it again?

Pause at 88%. That orange layer is the part of this bathroom you’ll never see again, and the part that decides whether it stays dry.

Tile and grout look waterproof, but they aren’t. Over time, water works its way through grout lines into the wall behind them. What stops it is the waterproofing behind the tile.

In this Mississauga bathroom you can watch the layers go on:
78% — moisture-resistant boards on the shower walls, niches already framed in.
88% — the orange waterproofing membrane over the boards, seams taped, niches wrapped.
100% — tile, glass, done. And every layer that keeps it dry is out of sight.

Swipe for the details:
→ A walk-in shower behind glass on a half wall, where a shower curtain used to be
→ Marble-look tile floor to ceiling, and across the ceiling
→ Two niches built into the waterproofed wall, so there’s no shower caddy
→ A linear drain, so the floor slopes one way
→ Matte black rain head plus a hand shower on a slide bar

Planning a bathroom? Before you pick tile, ask what’s going behind it.

Save this for your bathroom plans, and send it to whoever you’re renovating with.

Ottawa could give you up to $10,000 toward a heat pump. I’d want you to know that before you pay for another furnace.

If your old heating is nearing the end of its life, you’re already facing a big expense. I’d use that moment to look at what the house needs in summer, too.

A heat pump can warm your home in January and cool it in July. If you’re switching from oil, propane or electric baseboards, it could lower your heating bills as well. You’re spending money on a replacement anyway—this could change what you get for it.

Then let’s work out what you would actually pay.

Take the example in this post: an eligible home replacing electric baseboards, a qualifying 3-ton heat pump and a $15,000 installation. Ontario’s $3,750 rebate leaves $11,250 before HST.

That calculation doesn’t include the announced federal rebate; the rules for combining the programs still need confirming. The federal offer is up to $10,000 for households below median income, or $2,000 for other eligible homeowners. Applications are expected by January 2027.

I’d want to see those numbers for your house before choosing the equipment. And with Ontario, get approval before installation.

Save this if a heating upgrade is on your list, or send it to someone still heating with oil or baseboards.

Comment RULES and we’ll message you the link when the new rules are published.

All amounts in CAD. The installation example is illustrative, before HST.

Would you put this on your wall, or is home where you want fewer screens?

Apple has announced HomeView, a shared display for recipes, calls and compatible smart-home controls.

The appeal is easy to picture. When your hands are full, you can ask for the lights. While cooking, you can follow recipe steps by voice. With a compatible camera, you can check who’s at the door without reaching for your phone.

Those small conveniences could make a busy evening feel a little easier.

But adding technology also means deciding what you’re comfortable bringing into your home. Will it work with your existing devices? Is everyone comfortable with the camera and microphone? Will the whole household find it useful?

For us, that’s how a smart-home upgrade earns its place: it reliably takes some effort out of daily life. If it needs more attention than it saves, the benefit starts to disappear.

Swipe through what HomeView offers and its limitations. Would you put one at home? Tell us what would make it worthwhile or what puts you off.

At Capable, making everyday life easier is also what we plan renovations around. The layout, lighting and materials should work together so your whole home feels comfortable, holds up to daily use and stays a place you enjoy for years.

Your renovation dollars should keep working for you long after the work is finished, in a layout that makes daily routines easier, lighting that suits how you use each room, and materials that last.

The baking tray is behind the pans again.

You move one board, lift a pan and finally pull it out. Tomorrow, the same workaround repeats with the cutlery drawer or the spices at the back of a cabinet.

That irritation is useful. It shows what the next kitchen needs to solve before the cabinets are ordered: what you reach for most, what stays buried and what keeps landing on the counter because it has no proper place.

For one normal week, notice the workarounds you repeat. Bring those moments into the design conversation. A special organizer only helps when it fits the way your household actually cooks.

What is the one kitchen item that never has a proper place in your home?

How are custom kitchen cabinets actually made?

Every cabinet part is cut and edge-banded first. After that, the production path depends on the finish:

• Melamine → assembly• Painted MDF or stained wood → sanding and finishing → assembly

That difference matters when you compare cabinetry. Ask which material, finish and production steps are included in your scope.

Not all renovation companies approach projects the same way.

Here are a few things we would never do:

Start without a clear plan
Every successful renovation begins with proper planning. Layout, scope, and details should be defined before construction starts to avoid delays and confusion.

Provide vague quotes
A clear and detailed quote ensures everyone understands the scope of work. This helps prevent unexpected costs and keeps the project transparent.

Cut corners
The quality of what’s behind the walls is just as important as what’s visible. Skipping steps or rushing work can lead to long-term issues.

Lack communication
Consistent updates and clear communication are essential throughout a renovation. Clients should always feel informed and confident in the process.

The difference in a renovation often comes down to the standards behind the work
