"Haeridan-gil is a place where the layered time of an ordinary residential neighborhood has been transposed into a cultural streetscape through renovation. In these alleys, where old Western-style houses are reinterpreted with distinct sensitivities to weave new narratives in every crevice, the value of architecture is reduced not to physical scale, but to a matter of attitude and attunement. At the sharp, acute-angled intersection where these alleys converge, "Koma" establishes its presence upon a precarious boundary.
As its name suggests—meaning "little one" in Korean—the physical scale of Koma is modest, yet the architectural gestures embedded within it are by no means light. Rather than confronting the inherent limitations of the triangular site head-on, the building fluidly embraces them, constructing its own resolute vocabulary upon those constraints.
The rhythmic, ascending line of the staircase—stretching from the ground floor to the rooftop terrace—harmonizes with the pedestrian tempo of Haeridan-gil while playfully hijacking the gaze to introduce a variation in the street's flow. The vivid red cloaking the stairs and terrace draws a bold line against the loose, vintage sentiment characteristic of Haeridan-gil, offering a futuristic contrast. This is not a superficial device meant merely to stand out, but an intentional architectural intervention proposing a new pulse and rhythm to the locale. When eyes linger, and footsteps follow that red line, the building functions not as a transient waypoint to bypass, but as an "architectural comma" that prompts passersby to pause and contemplate space, projecting a presence far exceeding its physical dimensions.
Koma does not settle for being merely a "small building." Whereas existing renovated houses rely on superficial interior decoration, here, the form, structure, and color themselves constitute the spatial narrative. This compact edifice freely traverses the boundaries of plan, section, and elevation, proving its mode of existence across every dimension, thereby rendering it all the more courageous and vivid.
Refusing to remain a marginalized gap left between the boulevard and the alley, this building resolutely claims its place as a solid, gravitational center, akin to another "small sun" in the urban fabric. Shining brightly, transparently, and decisively, Koma is by no means small architecture. As the rich streetscape of Haeridan-gil naturally permeates this vessel, we are led to quietly envision the vibrant and diverse future this street will inevitably embrace."
