Rug sizing 101: the cheat sheet we use ourselves 📐
One question we hear constantly at the warehouse: "what size rug do I actually need?" Here's the quick answer for every room:
🛋️ Living room: go big or go bare. At minimum, the front legs of your sofa and chairs should sit on the rug. For most living rooms that means starting at 8' x 10': a 5' x 8' only works in small sitting areas.
🍽️ Dining room: the rug should extend at least 24" past the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when they're pulled out. For most dining sets, that means starting at 8' x 10'.
🛏️ Bedroom: a king bed wants a 9' x 12' with about two-thirds under the bed; a queen is happy with an 8' x 10'. Too small and the bed swallows the rug entirely.
🚪 Hallways & entryways: a runner should leave 4–5" of floor visible on each side. Measure twice: hallway widths vary more than you'd think.
Our best sizing tip: tape out the footprint with painter's tape before you buy anything. Costs nothing, saves regret.
