Yep, even THIS house (condo) got decluttered and on the market on time! Just for reference, this photo shows only part of the Living Room. The far wall is where the stairs down to the entrance were. Yes, we did have to climb over the top of everything at first to get in and out of the house.

And nope, I don't do this kind of work myself physically anymore but I can still help you.

If you are facing this kind of situation with your own stuff, OR trying to help someone you love, please reach out to me. I understand the feelings of isolation, shame, and frustration.

The first step is NOT getting a dumpster, it's talking about the reality of the situation, the mental, emotional and physical abilities needed to address it, and how to make sure everyone involved gets the help and support they need.

Much love to anyone dealing with this.

Moving Myth #2: "I'll never be able to sort through everything I own."

Most people immediately say to me, "What am I going to do with all of my stuff?" and they gesture wildly around them. They know they are going to have to go through it and make some hard decisions. We'll talk about HOW to do that in tomorrow's post, but today we are talking about creating a Timeline so you can get it all done .

Are you avoiding decluttering because you're waiting for big chunks of interrupted time to appear? When you'll feel energized and motivated?

Um...that may or may not happen. But what if I told you that you CAN get it ALL done, in a few months, without hating your Life? In 1 hour here, 30 minutes there, you just need to make small commitments, not marry the whole project.

Take a minute to imagine your beautiful house, clutter-free and looking it's best! Maybe you are getting ready to move soon or just thinking about it, maybe you're sick of all the clutter. This plan will keep you on track!

First set a start date AND finish line to make your dream come true!

Then map it out, month by month. Below is a sample of a Plan I would suggest to someone who wants to get it all done by next Spring.

There is a lot to know, there's HOW to declutter, WHAT questions to ask yourself, WHY things should be done in a certain order and we dig deep to change some habits so staying organized in your next house is so easy.

If you want a simple Plan to get started or talk through what's blocking you, set up a free coaching call with me. I'd love to help you with your Dream!

WELCOME TO MOVING MYTHBUSTERS WEEK!

Every day this week, I’m going to bust one of the seven biggest myths about getting your house ready to sell and moving to a new home.

These are the worries that keep people awake at night and get them awfulizing the whole process before they’ve even started.

The good news? It doesn’t have to be that way!

MYTH #1: “I can’t do this! I haven’t moved in years and don’t even know where to start!”

Here’s something that might surprise you. One of the first things most people do when they’re getting ready to move is buy a bunch of boxes and start packing.

And that’s exactly what I DON’T want you to do!

In fact, packing wouldn’t even make my list of the first FIVE things you should do.

One of the questions I ask my moving clients over and over again is what I call my Magic Question:

“WHERE IS THAT GOING TO GO?”

And the answers are often, “I hadn’t thought of that,” “I have no idea,” or “Well, it SHOULD go there, but…”

So before you buy those boxes, let me ask you something. Where are you going to put them once they’re packed? In the garage that’s already full? The basement where you’ve been storing things for the past 20 years?

See the problem?

That’s why I recommend starting with your long-term storage areas. The basement, attic, garage, utility closets, wherever you’ve been tucking things away for years.

Take a look at these before-and-after photos of a basement we cleared out. Not only did we get rid of a lot of things that didn’t need to move, but we made room for all the boxes that would eventually be packed.

And that’s just one example of why the order you do things matters so much.

After more than 30 years of helping people get organized and prepare for moves, I’ve learned that the whole process is much less overwhelming when you know what to do, when to do it, and why.

You CAN do this. You just need a good plan!

Chili fall weather means it’s time to get out my dad’s favorite cashmere sweater.

This is very special to me and it’s one of the few things I’ve kept that belong to my father since he passed away a few years ago.

The sweater is warm, cozy, and perfect, just like my dad!

I don’t regret all of his things that we let go of, but I’m really glad I kept this.

This is me on a rainy Sunday. Cozy socks, a good book, and my supervisor keeping a close eye on things.

It's raining ALL DAY here in central Maryland. You might have big plans involving the sofa and Netflix (same here!). But imagine how great you'll feel if you also got a few little things done around the house.

I'm a big fan of small actions that give BIG rewards. That little thrill every time you open a drawer, cabinet, or closet and everything you need, use, and love is right there where you need it.

You don't have to be a Type A perfectionist to get there. Small steps, done regularly, are all it takes.

Here are 5 easy things you can do today without ruining the chill day vibe.

1. Kitchen junk drawer
Gather the random hardware and bits you're afraid to toss. Bag them, label it "Misc. from Kitchen, Oct. 2026," and put it in a box in the basement or garage marked "Misc. House Things." Done.

2. Your closet
Move your cozy fall shoes, bags, and clothes front and center. Slide the summery things to the back. No big reorganizing. Just make what you'll wear now (and what fits now) easy to grab.

3. Pet toys and gear
Toss the old, gross stuff your pets don't use or have outgrown. Need to replace something? Put a shopping date on your calendar, even if it's online.

4. Papers
Bring a stack to the sofa and scan with your phone while your show plays. Then recycle or shred. (Or pay a kid to shred!)

5. Cookbooks
Pick one you love but never use and flag recipes with sticky notes. I have been doing this for 30 years. A note on the TOP of the page means "make this real soon." A note on the SIDE means "someday." These days I scan my someday recipes into Apple Notes.

Which one are you trying today? Tell me in the comments!

Do you have a shredder, but also piles of papers that you aren’t shredding?

If you live in Montgomery County, Maryland, there’s a great solution just for you!

Fall is my favorite time of year, and I love refreshing my outdoor planters, decorating the fireplace mantles, and putting a little bit of the season in decor around the house.

But every year, I do less. I donate or give away whatever I didn’t use the previous year, and I just spend less time and money on the whole project. My goal is to get it all down to one bin per holiday, which seemed impossible a few years ago but now it’s a goal I feel really good about.

I just don’t want to be stuck in habits that have started to feel like obligatory tasks.

To be honest, I only want to spend time on things that bring me joy. That’s the truth of it.

Isn’t it crazy that our society labels that kind of thought as “selfish?” As if Life is supposed to be stressful with tons of To Do items packed into every day?

Not only do I reject that kind of thinking, but now that I’m 58 years old, I actually rebel against it!

Right now I’m sitting on my totally undecorated deck, playing with the dogs on a beautiful Fall morning, and it’s glorious!

What do you think?

Did you decorate for Fall yet?
