Dead ash trees standing across Frederick County require a different removal plan than live trees. Emerald ash borer has killed many local ash, and the wood grows more brittle every season it stands. Many are still standing in yards, along driveways, and at field edges.

Dried ash limbs can snap unexpectedly when cut, pulled, or bumped. Climbers often avoid putting weight on the tree, working from a lift or bucket instead, or using heavy equipment to bring the tree down from a safe distance. Every rigging point and cut is planned around wood that will not bend or hold the way living wood does.

Removing a dead ash sooner rather than later typically makes the job safer and simpler. Watts Tree Experts handles hazardous and standard tree removal in Frederick, Thurmont, Myersville, and throughout the region, including the Eastern Panhandle and Southern Pennsylvania. Dead ash near homes, driveways, and roads poses the greatest risk as limbs continue to drop.

Hey there! Our crew works right under Catoctin Mountain in Thurmont, using local knowledge to tailor our services. Where do you call home in Frederick County? What’s the biggest tree on your street? 🌳

Topping trees or hacking off big branches actually does more harm than good. It might seem like a smart move for safety, but it can lead to some serious issues down the road. Those big cuts don’t heal right, letting decay sneak in and weaken the trunk. Plus, the tree ends up sprouting weak branches that can snap easily in bad weather. And hey, taking too many leaves can even starve the tree!

If your tree's feeling cramped, instead of just chopping it down, consider crown reduction or selective thinning to keep its natural look. Making proper cuts at branch junctions helps it bounce back too! For professional pruning and tree removal in Frederick, Thurmont, and surrounding Maryland areas, check out Watts Tree Experts!

Buck rubs are stripping bark from young trees across Frederick County as the fall deer rut builds. Bucks rub their antlers on small trunks to mark territory from October into November. Rub activity is especially common on properties bordering woods and farm fields.

Rub damage shows up as shredded bark and exposed wood on one side of a trunk, usually on trees one to four inches thick, often with broken lower branches. Young maples, cherries, and evergreens near wooded edges are frequent targets. When bark is stripped most of the way around the trunk, the tree can no longer move water and nutrients and may not recover.

Wire cages or plastic trunk guards offer the best protection for newly planted trees through the rut. Guards should be loosened as the tree grows so they never constrict the trunk. Watts Tree Experts helps homeowners in Thurmont, Frederick, and the surrounding countryside assess damaged trees and plan replacements where needed.

Branches growing close to chimneys and rooflines across Frederick County deserve a look before wood-burning season gets fully underway. Overhanging limbs create several cold-weather problems at once. Homes near mature oaks and maples are especially likely to have limbs reaching over the roof.

Limbs near a chimney can catch drifting sparks and drop leaves and twigs that collect around the flue and on the roof. Branches rubbing against shingles wear them down, and overhanging limbs give squirrels an easy path into attics and chimneys as they look for winter shelter. A common guideline is to keep branches at least 10 feet from a chimney opening.

Clearance trimming removes problem limbs with clean cuts that keep the tree healthy and balanced rather than lopsided. Watts Tree Experts provides tree trimming and pruning for homeowners in Frederick, Thurmont, Middletown, and surrounding Maryland communities. Late fall, after most leaves have dropped, makes it easier to see which branches need attention.

Watts Tree Experts is locally owned and family operated, and that's more than a line on our website. When the company carries your family's name, every yard, driveway, and farm lane we work on becomes a reflection of it.

That shows up in the small things. Our crews treat each property the way they'd want their own treated, take time to answer questions, and don't leave until the job is done right. It's also why so much of our work comes from neighbors recommending us to neighbors across Thurmont, Frederick, and the surrounding towns.

Being rooted here means we're part of the same community as our customers. We see you at the store, at the ballfield, and along the same back roads, and we want every job to be one you'd feel good telling a neighbor about.

What's a local, family-run Frederick County business you always go back to, and why?

Mulch heaped high against tree trunks across Frederick County lawns can slowly rot bark and weaken trees.

Bark is meant to stay dry. Mulch piled against the trunk holds moisture there, softening bark and inviting rot, fungal disease, and damage from voles and mice that nest in the pile over winter. Deep mulch can also draw roots upward to circle the trunk, where they may eventually girdle the tree.

Proper mulching keeps the root flare visible, where the trunk widens as it meets the ground. Two to four inches of mulch spread in a wide, donut-shaped ring, with a few inches of open space around the trunk, protects roots without trapping moisture against the bark. Fall is a good time to correct mulch volcanoes, before rodents settle into the piles for winter.

Watts Tree Experts brings local knowledge of Maryland landscapes to tree care, trimming, and removal for homeowners in Frederick, Thurmont, and surrounding communities.
