Join Takoma Park’s Sustainable Maryland Committee and our designer, Will Coleburn this evening for a presentation on accessible approaches to designing a garden of native plants– from initial assessment to final plant selection and layout. Residential and commercial gardeners will have an opportunity to learn about principles, techniques, and resources that design professionals use to make native plant gardens successful, functional, and beautiful.

Patrick Fitzgerald of the National Wildlife Federation will also share what wildlife need to survive and thrive in urban and suburban communities.

It’s almost time for the Evergreens to take the stage, so take advantage of the fall planting season and find a species that’s right for your space. Adding evergreen trees and shrubs to your garden provides foliage to combat the winter blues, adds structure to hold some ground, and offers shape when perennials are dormant. Our
resident birds and mammals will thank you for choosing these species as they provide critical shelter and food.

Visit us during open hours 2-6pm on Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturday this week to see what Evergreen species we have available.

Species highlighted include:
Juniperus virginiana - Eastern Redcedar
Ilex Glabra ‘Shamrock’ - Shamrock Inkberry
Ilex Opaca ‘Maryland Dwarf’ - American Holly MD Dwarf
Rhododendron maximum - Rosebay Rhododendron/Great Laurel
Kalmia Latifolia - Mountain Laurel

Available while supplies last.

This week’s Plant of the Week is Conoclinium Coelestinum also known as Blue Mistflower. This showy late season bloomer attracts pollinators and songbirds and freely self seeds.

A great addition to a pond border or as a colonizing groundcover as it can spread aggressively. Stop by the nursery during open hours this Friday from 2-6pm and Saturday from 10am-4pm.

Last week we welcomed a thoughtful group of Urban Ecology students from UMD to the nursery for a conversation that covered everything from the function of generalist species in urban soils, the challenges of designing gardens for urban environments, to how the cooperative economic structure combats an industry ripe with exploitation. We’re excited to see where this young group of future environmental policy makers, ecologists, landscape architects, and researchers take us next.

It's always a pleasure to chat with 51st. Whether you're a first time autumn gardener, or know the conditions of your space pretty well, read more about some of our suggestions this season.

Autumn is actually the best time of year to put in perennials (and there's still time for many veggies, too).
