Just in time!! Thank you Cornell Cooperative Extension for hosting 'Diving Perennials' where we learned about a few different species of perennials, how to handle them, and how to split them for future growth. They also gave us some to take home! Im going to use this knowledge and my takeaways to plant in that flower bed I just cleared of witchgrass. Stay tuned to see me put the perennials in the dirt!!

For this garden bed, I plan to grow a communal native flower bed. To begin, I have to remove all of the witchgrass (those clumps of grass you see). Young witchgrass is easy: you can just pull it out from above. But this witchgrass? Has probably been here for years 😭 I had to attack this garden bed in 2 parts. These pictures, from when I started, were the result of TWO HOURS of deweeding. Stay tuned to see the finished product!!

Celebrating little victories everywhere-

- Learning to use cages for my bell peppers

- Arugula fighting back for lifeeee after being almost completely chomped

- This beautifully colored bean pod

I havent been to the garden in over a week and these are all from weeks ago so Im hoping seeing these first/reminding myself of the good, won't hurt so much when I go investigate if theres any bad 😂

From the outside looking in-

There are currently 2 community gardens in Middletown. Yesterday, I went over to check out the one Im not renting a bed from. There were many things I saw that gave me inspiration and motivation to bring back. Some of those things include: a large sign, numbered garden beds, communal composting, evidence they dont have a critter problem, bamboo growing in the lot.

This past weekend I spent time putting the garden to bed! Summer is officially over, the tomato plants are squeezing out whatever they have left. Dried beans are amassing nicely for 1 personal bowl of chili. I planted some lettuces, kales, and other greens last week. Covered it all in straw for some warmth and protection. While some critter has completely obliterated one of the new plants, some of the other ones are already growing. (Something I was worried about getting started so late in the season)

I stood there in awe yesterday realizing the drastic changes. The garden is no longer bright with colors or seemingly to be producing anything. But from my Summer season, Ive learned its all a part of the process. Something to take away from that...

Yesterday I got the chance to show my niece and nephew where all the magic happens at Big Yellow Sun @ Keith’s Farm! T***s said to me inside the tunnel, "this is really such a treat!" as she continued to eat more tomatoes than less 😅 It brought me such joy to be able to show them the vision, the dream, the goal.
