“My car key turns in the ignition, but the engine won’t start. What’s going on?”

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize: Just because a key is cut correctly doesn’t necessarily mean it will start your vehicle!

Many modern vehicles use an electronic security system called an immobilizer.

🔑 Here’s how it works:

When you insert your key into the ignition, your vehicle checks for a properly recognized transponder chip inside the key.

If the vehicle doesn’t recognize that chip, it may prevent the engine from starting — even though the key fits perfectly and turns the ignition!

That’s why automotive key replacement often involves more than simply cutting a piece of metal.

✅ Programming to the vehicle’s security system

✅ Testing to make sure everything works properly

Not necessarily! And before you spend money replacing it, there are a few things worth checking.

🔋 1. Check the battery. A weak or dead battery is one of the most common reasons a remote stops responding.

🚗 2. Try your spare key. If your spare works normally, that can help narrow down the problem.

🔐 3. Check whether the vehicle still starts. On many vehicles, the remote buttons and the immobilizer system operate differently. Your remote might stop unlocking the doors while the key can still start the engine!

🛠️ 4. Don’t automatically assume you need a new fob. Sometimes it’s a battery, damaged buttons, a connection issue, or something that needs further diagnosis.
