The Cottonwood Heights remodel addition.

Swipe for before and after.

This custom millwork component situated between the main entry of the home and the main level living room started with a conversation and a sketch in Caroline's notebook.

Solid white oak. Double-sided - one side, not pictured, for entryway storage (coats, boots and the like) and the other, shown here, provides a landing pad for books, keepsakes and a daybed with integrated lighting built right in.

A collaborative component between architect, interior designer, client and fabricator.

Birds, bats, bees, maple seed spinners. What do you see in the knots in the thermally modified wood siding at Glouster Memorial Park?

This is the new, and nearly complete, concession stand at Memorial Park, replacing one that had been there a long time.

The park floods frequently and substantially, so the structure sits on structural steel that lifts it out of the floodplain - a challenge that made the ramp design one of the most involved parts of this component of the project, since it has to climb that same height and still meet permitting.

A large overhang provides shade and rain cover, and the concession stand itself creates a covered space underneath for community members to hang out in while watching baseball games.

The material palette is simple and natural on purpose. Thermally modified wood siding, steel and concrete. We selected the products, tones and shades so they make sense with the surroundings, things that blend in while still holding their own weight, nothing too contrasting against the dense wooded backdrop.

This is one part of a larger park transformation at Memorial Park, and we will be sharing more about it as the project continues through construction.

Glouster, Ohio is a town of about 1,800 in the Appalachian hills of Athens County, one of Ohio's Little Cities of Black Diamonds.

A glimpse of parts of the design process. From conceptual materials board and an early hand sketch, through floor plans and massing studies, to the finished exterior.

Every project generates a stack (physical and digital) of sketches, drawings, models, photos, etc. It's easy to only ever see and share the finished photos.

This is a glimpse at some of the BTS.

This coffee bar's repurposed slab comes from the owner's mom, who wasn't really feeling it anymore. The owners and Solstice were, and we are happy to incorporate it into the project. Bonus, it keeps a good slab out of a landfill.

This project adds a two story volume to the existing structure of a 1920's unreinforced masonry bungalow in Sugarhouse, Utah.

We are expanding the kitchen and living space, adding a mudroom, office and full bathroom at grade and adding a private primary suite on the second level.

Construction starts in the coming weeks

Two front elevation renderings of a wonderful processing facility and community gathering space for Rising Appalachia Ohio

The organization this structure will house is built on education, demonstration, and positive community exchange.

On one side of the structure, chestnuts and acorns, among other locally sourced, harvested, produced goods will be processed, and the same roof that shelters the processing facility work extends out to foster the kind of gathering Rising Appalachia's mission is built around.

The community gathering happens on the other side of the building. In a space that includes a commercial kitchen, a classroom, space for restful evening yoga sessions and room enough to open right up to the outside.

A mezzanine level above steps out onto a spacious deck facing the densely wooded hills of the site, classic Appalachian Ohio terrain.

We are nearing the Construction Documents phase and will be sharing more about this project in the coming weeks.
