Most backyard play areas start in a catalog. Ours should start with the kids.
We tend to buy the playset first, drop it in the middle of the grass, and build everything around it. Then the kids outgrow it, and we’re left with a structure nobody climbs.
Instead, design for how your family actually plays. A sandbox and mud kitchen for the toddler years, open ground that becomes a soccer field later. Put it where you can see it from the kitchen window or dinner table. Mine sits right by my kitchen garden, so I can w**d and still keep an eye on everyone.
In Houston, shade is non-negotiable, so plant a tree or hang a sail. Use wood mulch or turf for soft landings, and please skip the rubber mulch. Then keep it simple: a few logs, a pile of sand, and a bin for every Hot Wheels car at cleanup time.
