Also rich because he comes to the garden to talk to me about his day. 😍

I’ve been gardening for as long as I can remember, but when we moved here in 2019, I finally had some serious space to work with.

I started with a few raised beds. Then I gardened on a plot on my neighbor’s property. Eventually, I looked at our dying grove and started imagining a garden closer to home.

These videos are from 2024 through 2026, and it’s funny to look back and see how much has changed. It’s been one project after another, and every time I think I’m done, I come up with something else I want to move, build, or plant.

It’s still a work in progress, but it’s become my sanctuary. I’m glad I took videos along the way, because when I’m standing in the middle of the next project, I forget how far this place has come.

Growing in the right season
Something I think a lot of people don't realize when they first start gardening is that not everything grows best at the same time of year.

And depending on where you live, your growing season might look completely different from someone else's.

Take tomatoes for example. Here in Southern California, we can sometimes keep them alive through winter, but that doesn't mean they're going to produce much. Tomatoes need warm temperatures and plenty of sunlight to really crank out fruit. Shorter days and cooler nights slow everything down.

But... things like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, peas, and carrots actually prefer the cooler weather. Try growing some of those in the middle of our summer heat and you'll find out pretty quickly why timing matters.

I think a lot of people get frustrated with gardening because they're trying to grow the right plants at the wrong time. Just because the nursery has it for sale doesn't mean it's the best time to plant it!

If you're in Southern California, don't pack up your gardening tools just because summer is over. We've got a whole other growing season ahead of us!

And if you're new here, stick around here at krissygrows where I share gardening tips for Zones 9 and 10 so you can spend less time guessing and more time actually growing something.

You have NO idea how excited I get when someone tells me they want to learn how to start their own plants from seed! 🤗

And I say this as someone who sells plant starts every year. I don't care if teaching you how to grow your own means I lose a customer. I'd rather see you learn a skill you can use for the rest of your life!

Learning to start seeds opens up a whole new world of things you can grow. There are SO many varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers that you'll probably never find at your local nursery!

That's exactly why I created my Simple Seed Starting course, and I'm pretty excited that it's included in the 2026 Yardsteading Bundle!

I teamed up with a whole bunch of other creators sharing their knowledge on gardening, raising chickens, preserving food, sourdough, medicinal herbs, and all kinds of other useful skills.

The entire collection is just $50, and I've got all the details tucked into my bio if you want to see what's included!

Am I right or am I right? Lol

I've always been the type of person who would rather figure out how to do something myself than ask for help. And while I still love being able to do things on my own, this little greenhouse project has taught me something.

Being self sufficient doesn't mean you have to do everything alone.

When I started this challenge, my goal was to put my skills to work and earn enough money to buy a greenhouse. I figured I'd sew some things, sell what I could grow and make, and slowly work my way toward that goal.

What I didn't expect was how many people would show up to help me get there.

Every purchase, every share, and every person who has cheered me on has meant more than you probably realize.

And someday very soon when I'm standing in that greenhouse starting seeds and growing plants, I'll know it wasn't something I accomplished all on my own.

It took a village. And I'm pretty dang grateful for mine. 🥹❤️

If you're only growing what you can find at your local nursery, you're missing out on a whole lot of really cool plants!

One of the best gardening skills you can learn is how to start your own plants from seed. It opens up a whole new world of varieties you probably won't ever find sitting on a nursery shelf.

I'm talking about all those unusual tomatoes, beautiful flowers, herbs, and vegetables that you see in seed catalogs but never seem to find as plant starts.

And once you learn how to grow your own starts, you're no longer limited to whatever the garden center happens to have available. You get to decide what you want to grow!

That's why I created my Simple Seed Starting Course. I walk you through everything you need to know to start seeds indoors, from the supplies you'll need to caring for your seedlings and getting them ready for the garden.

It's a skill you'll be able to use season after season, and one that can completely change what you're able to grow.

My course is included in the Yardsteading Bundle along with a bunch of other resources to help you build your gardening and homesteading skills.

You can find the bundle through the link in my bio!

The song lyrics capture exactly how I feel at the end of every season year after year. I know all this will be gone in a few months but I know and I'll come back next summer.

The more you look the more you'll find is such a good testament to how we should all look for the good, always.

Bundling herbs and flowers to hang dry took quite a bit of time until I learned this method of rubber band wrapping.

I use this method for so many things all around the garden!

If you're anything like me, learning one new skill usually turns into wanting to learn about 10 more. 😂

That's why I was so excited to be invited to contribute my Simple Seed Starting course to the 2026 Yardsteading Bundle!

A whole bunch of creators came together to share what they know about growing food, raising chickens, preserving harvests, making sourdough, working with herbs, and all kinds of other useful homesteading skills.

And the best part? You can get the entire collection for just $50!

Whether you're just getting started or you've been doing this for years, there's probably something in there you've been wanting to learn.

I added the link with all the details in the comments if you want to see what everyone contributed!
