Next season’s flowers begin with this season’s buds. Azaleas, lilacs, forsythia, and many bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, so fall pruning can remove the buds that would flower next year.

For these shrubs, prune just after flowering to preserve the next display of color. A thoughtful approach to timing lets your garden’s seasonal character shine.

Next spring’s flowers begin with thoughtful fall planting. Give your garden time to settle in before winter:

-Plant perennials about 4–6 weeks before your area’s expected first frost so roots have time to establish.
-Plant spring-blooming bulbs, such as tulips and daffodils, while the soil is cool and workable, before the ground freezes.
-If frost threatens tender new growth, use frost cloth for temporary protection. Mulch helps insulate roots just keep it clear of plant crowns.

Your USDA Hardiness Zone helps you choose suitable plants, but local frost dates and soil conditions are better guides for timing.

Layered planting brings depth and character to your entryway.

Grasses, branches, and trailing greenery create texture at varied heights, catching the last of the evening light. A palette of cream, plum, burgundy, gold, and deep green adds richness and almost glow after dusk.

Planters bring shape and texture to a garden, even as the planting season quiets.

Choose protection suited to your plants’ hardiness and local temperatures. A sheltered position and insulation around pots, using burlap, bubble wrap, or a larger container with insulating material, can help protect vulnerable roots. Pot feet or bricks keep drainage paths clear and reduce standing water during freeze-thaw cycles.

Save these steps to help ensure your container plants survive the winter and thrive again in spring.

Do you know which vines need fall pruning for spring growth?

For late-flowering clematis, cut the stems back to 12–18 inches above the ground, leaving a strong pair of buds. This encourages new growth and more flowers.
For wisteria, trim long side shoots back to 2–3 buds. This redirects energy from leaves to spring flowers.
For honeysuckle, trim tangled growth and remove some of the oldest canes at the base. This improves airflow, reduces disease risk, and supports healthy new shoots.
