Artistically Renewed

Furniture artistically renewed. For us, recovering lost gems is not just a job.

When we signed up for an Annie Sloan chalk paint class nearly 6 years ago, we never could have imagined that refurbishing furniture would become such a big part of our lives. Not only do we love the work - from painting to sanding to staining (and re-staining, and re-staining), but we love the happiness our furniture brings to other people’s lives. Handing someone their first kitchen set, or a dec

Another dresser finished this weekend. It was beautiful, but the veneer was in bad shape. I opted to patch and paint with my Fuji sprayer. Such a smooth finish, really love how the claw feet turned out. The brass pulls look great after a cleaning.

Took advantage of the rainy weather this weekend to finish the transformation of this waterfall dresser. I cleaned up the piece, prepped, and painted last weekend while the weather was nice. This weekend I applied the floral transfer and installed new brass pulls. They look great with the transfer. The transfer turned out great but took nany hours to apply!

Almost finished with this beautiful dresser. I wanted a natural finish, but the fine details were intimidating. This was the perfect chance to try soda blasting. There were several false starts but was finally able to make it work yesterday! I’m really pleased with the result!

Finally got around to finishing this bedroom set. The tops have a new coat of walnut stain and the bodies have been painted with General Finishes Coastal Blue. That color is a great match for this furniture! The pulls were black and grungy. I cleaned them up and they look great.

We came across this repurposed grandmother clock at an auction but weren’t able to get the winning bid. So we decided to make one ourselves. Got a grandfather clock cabinet on marketplace and transformed into it unique piece. Already have another broken grandfather clock to make another one.

Desk conversion into nightstands. This knee hole desk was ready for a new purpose in 2024. We brought it home and converted to nightstands / end tables. Its ready for a new life!

Conversion of golden oak table to weathered farm table. Probably the fastest I’ve ever refinished a table. Turned it around in 1 week to get it on the truck to NYC. Completed the chairs in time for the next trip.

5 drawer dresser updated from dark cherry finish to natural cherry. The clear coat really brings out the beautiful wood grain!

Just finished a project to convert an art deco vanity into end tables. Stripped away away a lot of the decorative veneer to get a simpler look. Thinking about doing another set, what do you think?

Another project finished. I love these antique oak dressers. They’re usually in bad shape when they come to me and this was no exception. I was so excited to start and forgot to take a before photo. This was my first project using a paint scraper to remove the existing finish and I was reslly pleased with the result. The interior of these old dressers is usually pretty bad so I tale the extra time to strip the drawer interiors and shellac. The result is worthwhile and you wouldn’t hesitate to put your clothes inside. I have a beautiful mahogany bow front dresser that arrived the same day. It’s second in the batting order this month.

The transformation of the bedroom set is complete. I used Benjamin Moore Advance to update thus set to navy blue. I was able to keep the original hardware and freshen up with bright gold. People seem to love this navy and gold look and I have another set in the garage that will get a similar transformation. This bedroom set is in excellent used condition and ready for a new life in navy!

I’m updating this 5 piece bedroom set from a dark brown to my favorite navy and gold. One of the nightstands is complete. Dressers are in progress!

Another custom project finished this week. Kara found this walnut dresser and asked me to refinish. She wanted a walnut finish, but not the existing dark brown color. I stripped the piece and the top and drawers were a beautiful solid walnut. Unfortunately the sides were poplar making a totally natural finish impossible. I used a walnut stain to even out the poplar and deepen the walnut. I protected the piece with dead flat poly.

About half of the drawer runners were missing and had to be fabricated. I used some spare poplar to create the new runners. We kept the drawer pulls that came with the dresser, but I’m fairly certain they aren’t original.

I enjoy learning a bit of history on these projects and definitely learned something on this one. The dovetail joinery on the drawers has a half circle with a pin. I learned that this “pin and cove joint” is very specific and dates the piece to 1871-1900 manufactured in North America .

I think it turned out great!

Delivered this project tonight. I refinished this black buffet earlier this year for Patty and she showed me an old house window that she bought. The window has a textured glass that i converted to a mirror using the Rustolrum mirror effect soray paint. I painted the frame nlack yo match the buffet. This was a fun project that required a lot of patience to tape all the glass before painting.

I’ve finished the restoration of the handmade dresser. The entire piece was stripped to bare wood. I used Minwax Aged Barrel stain followed by a white wash. This gives the piece a very rustic look which I think is consistent with its style and condition. The drawer interiors were a mess so I stripped to bare wood and shellacked. Joinery was glued and clamped to keep it tight. I also stripped and shellacked the back of the dresser. Finally, I used General Finishes Flat Out Flat to provide a protective top coat.

This dresser is ready to live a new life and serve another generation. If I had a beach house this would be perfect. 😎

Next set of dressers are in the queue. Picked this up from a family moving to Colorado. They’re a bit scratched up, but in really solid shape overall. After this set I’ll take a break from dressers and work on some tables.

I’m thinking this set will get a walnut top and painted base. Probably white, but maybe navy. I’ve done both with previous pieces and the results were great!

Making progress on the handmade dresser. I have the piece stripped to bare wood and ready for finishing. I’m testing some finishes that hide the green poplar. The picture below has three options. On the dresser top and first drawer I applied Minwax Aged Barrel, sanded back, and then whitewashed. These were the greenest areas of poplar. The next drawer is just Aged Barrel Stain. The bottom two drawers are just white wash. I’m tempted to go with the white wash, but don’t think it will cover the greener sections of poplar. So I’ll go with the Aged Barrel Stain and white wash. Probably add a second round of white wash to get a lighter look overall.

Bought a used dresser last weekend from a really interesting guy that lives on Bull Run Mountain. Honestly the visit to his workshop/barn was worth the price of the dresser. He was with his Mom when she bought this dresser at a flea market in 1973. Its been hauled all over creation by both him and his son. Its been stored in the back of the barn for the last 10 years.

I was anxious to get started and stripped off all the gross stuff and the old finish. Was really excited to see what kind of wood was underneath. Disappointed to find poplar which dashed my plans of a bleached natural finish.

This piece is quite obviously hand made. Assembly uses nails and not dovetail and other joinery techniques. I know its at least 50 years old and actually probably quite a lot older.

Check out the grossness on the back. I immediately stripped it down to bare wood so I wouldn’t have to see this any longer than necessary. Applied a few coats of shellac to the back to keep in sealed and clean.

Some pieces like the white dresser require a full overhaul. Others like these Hekman end tables only require some minor repairs. One of these end tables had a broken corner that was repaired with Bondo and blended with dark gray paint.

Photos from Artistically Renewed's post 09/04/2023

The transformation of the white Dresser is complete. Layers of white and yellow paint were stripped away to expose the beautiful veneer. The entire piece was lightened up with wood bleach and sealed with a Flat Out Flat top coat. The drawers were glued and clamped and then stripped to bare wood. The interior was shellacked and and is clean and ready for clothes. Lastly, new pulls were added. These pulls were so popular on the last dresser that we decided to use them again. I’ll add some Slideez lubricant to the drawer bottoms and the piece will be done.

This was a major overhaul that took a few weeks start to finish. The veneer was badly damaged in several places. We decided to embrace the damaged veneer and stay with a rustic look. I think the end result was fantastic!

I mostly finished stripping the white empire dresser. Still have to get the white paint out some nooks and crannies. One round of wood bleach has been applied and it’s starting to look pretty good. Will apply another round of wood bleach tonight.

The interior of the drawers have also been stripped and next I’ll glue and clamp all the joints to make sure everything is tight.

Photos from Artistically Renewed's post 08/27/2023

A new transformation is in progress! Once again I forgot to take a “before” picture. It has a layer of white paint over a yellow. The veneer on the top and drawer fronts us in good shape. The edges on the top are really bad. Not sure how i’ll deal with that yet. The veneer on the side rails is totally burned through from a previous owner. Drawers are falling apart which makes it easier to clean and refinish the insides. The drawer interiors will get sanded, shellacked, glued, and clamped.

This piano stool project has been in the garage for months. I always forget the “before” photos, but you can get an idea from the “in progress” shots. It was a lit of work stripping and sanding all the spindles. I learned about soda blasting after it was finished, so now I’m looking for a new project to try that method. It turned out nice with a shellac finish. The claw feet were cleaned up a left with an aged patina.

I’ve been up to some refinishing projects this summer. I brought this dining tabletop back to life.

Just finished the transformation of this old dresser. It was pretty beaten down but looks ready for the next chapter. It was stripped to natural wood and protected with ultra flat poly. The drawers were also treated with wood bleach to get closer to the color of the rest of the pieces. Original photo in the comments.

I just brought this old guy back to life. Mohagany dresser with solid wood drawers and framing. Its been around a long time and showing some age. We have revived with a natural finish and it’s ready for a new home.

This antique oak dresser has come a long way since it first showed up in my garage. Some parts had to be rebuilt and others replaced. Once the years were stripped away the beautiful wood grain was apparent. I intentionally left it a bit rustic. A light white wash was applied to keep the natural color and then it was protected with flat high performance top coat. The hardware looks great after cleaning. I don’t think its a “daily driver” but certainly a great accent piece and good for storage.

Just refinished this vanity. It’s really well made and turned out great! It’s available for purchase.

It’s always fun picking up furniture from an auction. Sometimes we find an unexpected treat like this little backgammon set. Its often a time capsule. Check out the drawer liners from the 1965 Washington Post. My daughter was quick to remind me that 1965 was a really long time ago.😬

This vanity has just been refinished with a natural wood look. I love to darker veneer on the drawer fronts with the lighter wood on the rest of the piece. See more pictures in comments including the original finish. This vanity can be repurposed for a new life as a sofa table, hall table, or desk.
